SR20DEt swop help n info

Post by nirvash »

hi guys, as some of you may know i am starting getting things in motion for my SR20DET black top (s14) swop into my s13, i'm starting this thread cause i already have quite a few questions on it (ones i havent asked before, mainly parts questions) and qould really appreciate all the help i can get, thanks and lets hope all goes well! :P

firstly i want to run 2 12" fans, and wanted to know if this is quite easy to do, do they need to be suck or blow fans and are the ones from mr turbo any good, anyone used them?

next, is the standard ball bearing turbo on the s14 sr20 better then the mr turbo non ball bearing T3/T4, what can i get better response from (i would think the ball bearing but dont know) what can i get better power from? also would i get major lag if fitting a T61 ball bearing turbo from again mr turbo, not sure on what brand they stock...

also what intercooler size would be good for a balance between lag/response and power, i'm thinking a 600x300x100 what you guys think about this?

also at which point would it be better to fit a bigger throttle body, and if so what size, looking to get roughly 300whp?85mm???

what sort of power can u get from the stock turbo?

goin to get a z32 AFM, what sort of power are tese good up to?

will ask more questions as they come up,all your help and info will be appreciated guys, lets do it!!

First 300whp you can use the stock intake manifold and throttle body. No need to go aftermarket.

T28 - Now on the local S14 (our here in RSA came out with a non-ball bearing T28 turbo. Only the Jap motor or Jap import motors came out with a ball bearing turbos, however it was only ball bearing on the compressor side.

Radiator fans, as long as you go quality 12" your good. Dont know what type Mr. Turbo sells. It will be fans that sucks, seeing tha they are mounted behind your radiator. Also ugrade your radiator too a larger one. Stock S13 is way too small. Replance your thermostat with a proper nismo one. Stock ones go faulty after a while.

As for larger tubos, dont go cheap! By garrett or something that has got proper backing. Yes you are looking between R10 000 and R15 000 for a ball bearing turbo but you cant go wrong! Specs on the turbo will depend on your performance you want and how you want it to drive and respond. Little as possible lag, medium lag, loads of lag......

Stock turbo will only safely give you 210KW on the fly. Then you are pushing your injectors and turbo too the max.

My advice:

Buy a decent motor and gearbox.

Replace bearings with ACL race bearings

Buy a decent performance clutch - Will be between R4500 and R6500.

Proper aftermarket head gasket. Cometic is the way to go. Stay away from stock or cheap junk!

Open your head and make sure there is any major wear and tear. If something looks slightly suspect...replace it!

Proper radiator and cooling fans, replace your old water pipes. They are junk!

Check that your oil pump and water pump is 100%. If you can replace it, do it!

Check your VVT pulley if its in good nick, they love playing up!

Buy a meduim sized intercooler if you dont plan to drift. Huge one is a waste if you are not a full time drifter.

Buy larger injectors, dont screw around, buy 720cc plus and get it over and done with.

Water and meth is a motor safer! These motrs love to detonate on our crap fuel and this is the quickest way to pop a SR20. INstall water and meth kit and dont worry about det!

Get somebody that can much up the perfect turbo for you / for your needs and driving style. We cant tell you what will be best cause we all dont like the same thing.

For a high power SX, a oil cooler is not a bad idea!

OK, Im sure I missed something...but I will let you know if I can think of something.

Those part numbers are all from Mr Turbo.

If you want to skimp on your car go for that, If you want a hassle free turbo experience buy genuine Garrett Turbo's any thing from a GT28##to a GT30## in Ball bearing format.

The best way to go "budget" turbo is to buy a stock ball bearing turbo from a RB25 >R2500 upgrade the compressor wheel to a dash24 and keep the boost below 1 bar, after that any thing cheaper than a genuine Garrett will disappoint.

You can also look into getting a KKK/Borg Warner/Holset or Mitsubishi TD04, TD05, or TD06, but parts are more scares for these turbos in SA, although in genuine form, they are real good quality.

TD06 is a nice turbo, used by a lot of guys in the states for drifting, quick spool and makes a lot of power.

Go Garrett GT3071R (.63A/R) not too much lag, but 300kw+ power potential. Expensive, but worth it in the long run.

turbonetics are good and cheaper than garrett, just make sure you buy from a "real" dealer because some sell turbonetics with Mr turbo exhaust housings and comp wheels, (they fit in there)

Turbonetics are good turbo's, until they break. The B/B turbos can only be rebuild by the factory in USA. On the other hand, if a Garrett B/B has a problem, u can not rebuild it.
Maybe MR Turbo turbos's are not as good, but all rebuildable and parts are available.

i think because of budget i will stick with the stock turbo for the moment, one thing though, i'm looking at getting some 550cc injectors, i can get a really good deal on some bosch ones (basically cost price) just want to know if they will fit right in, or will any mods, adjustment to the fuel rail for instance need to be made?
