HARD Braking

Hi all.

I've just recently bought myself a pretty slick S13. The one PinkFluffyBunnies was selling.
He's got some cross drilled & slotted Brembo disks on the front which are awesome but I'm still quite unsatisfied with its stopping power. They still have the stock calipers though. Not sure what pads they have on now.

I was hoping to do a Wilwood big brake upgrade up front and then send my beautiful Brembo's to the back.
Making the B's fit on the back will apparently take some machining though. Is it worth the effort? How much will it cost and where could I do it?

Also I wanna remove the ABS system as I believe I can brake quicker without them cause they kick in far too soon even if I could adjust that I still wanna junk the system for light weight.

Also I want to leave the standard brake pump to make me push harder so it doesn't lock up so easily.

What do ya'll think about this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I'm still new to this whole thing but loving my SX thoroughly!!

What ever you do, the front to rear balance of any braking system is of utmost importance.
Forget about what "pump" you want to use, you will find that for a given travel vs displacement you may have to look at a different master cylinder.
Give you an idea here, I did big Brembos on an Alfa Romeo v6 turbo I had. 338mm front discs , big red Brembos as used on the Alfa GTa, rears were Alfa 155 front discs, 295mm with Ford Sierra front calipers on the rear.
Pads were Ferrodo DS3000,s.
I used an Isuzu KB bakkie master to sort displacement issues out. An Alfa 105 brake BIAS valve helped the rears..

I could come off an off ramp at close to 200kays /h , jump on the brakes and this car simply stopped.
Table top at Swarties, braked hard at the second grand stand and could get through the top corner. Car weighed 1040Kg.

If you are going to play brakes, prepare yourself for a lot of experimenting and changes. I am doing pretty much the same at the moment..

Here I used a std set of Audi b7 20 Turbo discs and calipers on an Alfa Turbo as well. Worked awesomely.


Here I had a set of AP caluipers and ds300 pads on a 330mm disc on the same little Alfa. These were probably the best brakes on this car except that the discs only lasted a 1000 kays. The pads were way too agressive for the disc material.



Went through the phase of machining my own calipers as well. What a waste of time.



A set of older Praggia calipers on std discs on an Alfa 156 Turbo I did..These were rather marginal on this car..




and a warning as to what can happen when you have BIG turbo power and std brakes...

In my experience with Brakes, If you buy a decent purpose designed Kit, its a matter of Bolt on and Drive.
Ive just done 2 of my cars with off the Shelf Bolt on Big Kits. 40 min Bolt on and Bleed and you on your way!
But that does come at a price (Anything from R15K-R50k)

Agree with Barry, If you going to Mix and Match and Machine and swop and change, you in for lots of experimenting and changes and Time.

Hmmm I think I'd be up for all the effort, trial and error. I'd learn more that way. Hopefully I won't die in the process though

So any better suggestions than putting the Brembo's and front calipers on the back and Wilwoods on the front?
I like the idea of having brake balance slightly more toward the rear than standard to get a lil oversteer going into corners.

I've PM'd BigChris about those Porche brakes, they made my heart race. They'd probably be able to stop it too.

Z32 / R32 rears. 297mm disk has drum for S13 handbrake which the s13 fronts don't.

Z32 fronts 280mm disk or get bigger disk and space out the caliper. Biggest disk under the Z32 caliper would be a 320mm.

R32 front caliper same as Z32 but has 296mm disk.

I have the above setup (320mm F 297mm R) with expensive disks and EBC yellow pads stock MC abs removed and is awesome. did 10 laps at a track day all hot laps. Need 17" or bigger. Setup cost me 22k

Biggest disk under the Z32 caliper would be a 320mm.

Lies, I have 324mm disks under my Z32 calipers

In all seriousness though I wouldn't suggest going over 320 with Z32 calipers. It was a bit fiddly getting my disks running properly and of course the pad doesn't cover the entire disk surface.

OPR has a set of Willwoods for sale. I would get these for the front.Good price as well.
That sorts out the fronts.

The rears will then be a case of mixing and matching until you get it right.
I would go same diameter as the front with something like a Subaru rear caliper.
Handbrake is taken care of either by utelising the existing disc and setup, machining the std disc for a bolt on bigger disc or by going full Subaru rears with handbrake mech.

Alternatively Vari are busy with a totally new handbrake/caliper all in one setup.This will be out soon.

Bigkriss is right on this one. Don't experiment with breaks rather buy ones that someone else with knowledge of what they where doing perfected

Anybody know if there are EBC YellowStuff pads available for stock S13 calipers?

I have 330mm floating rotors with machined out Z32 calipers. rear Z32 slotted rotors and calipers fits perfectly and handbrake still works.
S14,r32,Z32 calipers are bolt on for S13 front,just need to drill 4 hole pattern.

Best and cheapest brakes is Z350 brembos with 324mm stock rotors. Also a straight bolt on mod.

Stock MC works but pedal travel gets long after a few laps,still need to upgrade mine to BM57.
