cluster removal - trip odometer not working

Post by araf69 »

Anyona has done a DIY to remove a s13 cluster. my trip odometer is not working. Just stopped. Tried to reset it but its hard to push. I see there are 2 screws at the top and 4 below and then all the buttons have come out. Thanks

Hey bud,

Ye did it too, you got about all of it there, you will have to unplug the buttons from behind or push them out to get the whole cluster and the vent section out.

On the cluster it's self you will find 5 screw and 3 plugs holding it to the harness that you will need to unplug too

There is a little plug running from the cluster back into the cluster, this powers and sends trip signal to the trip meeter from the speedo.

Sorry to tell you but chances are that your speedo is shot rather than the trip meter as the motor control sits in the speedo, unless the cable is just come loose or a screw holding the gears together has come loose.

If you want though, and are in the JHB area, I can help u try fix it. Just PM me.

To get access to the inside of the cluster there is about 7 clips you need to loosen and you will have to take out a few screws on the back, and will have to remove the circuitry sheet on the back..... Just be careful if you remove the dials not to bend needle shafts otherwise you will have more non working dials....

Good Luck

Well I pulled the cluster out yesterday and stripped it - the small gear was broken inside so I glued it up with q bond. Now when I put it back got some weird wiring problems, my interor light, clock on cluster doesn't work. My radio as well doesn't work because it should go on when the ignition is on

Ha ha, dude, did u disconnect battery when u did this? Probably popped a fuse, as far as I can remember the inside lights including ur clock light and radio all work of the same fuse....

Check for blown fuses, bottom right pannel next to driver door....

Eish lookin like u gonna be tracin shorts....

In the door hinge area u have the elec windows, central locking, elec mirrors and speaker wire lines..... And that's about it that the door can effect..... Think maybee look for a short there, might be shorting and thus rerouting power away from the rest.....

I would have loved to have motivation like that to rewire everything.... Would be fun, he he he....

P.S. Here is a pin out of the clock plugs for trouble shooting if u need it

It`s not a short. A short will burn/melt wires and generally fcuk up everything.

I think I mixed up some wiring when I pulled out the cluster and I reconnected incorrectly. Got extra wires for for the boost gauge, alarm and radio
