Speed Whobble?? WTF??

Post by Captian »

Ahoy! All and Welcome back after the festive season. Trust you all had a Great one.

I have a Very stange problem.
I get a speed whobble with my Ride. Feels like the wheels are gonna fall off. Shakes the whole car inside like you go over cobble stones, but at 120.

The thing is it is only at certain Speeds in Different gears and Only if I Accelarate. The momment I leave the pedel it stops.
Also not when the ride is cold, so cant be the Balancing? or?
Had it this morning, parked off the whole day, when I went home it was not there until about 15km on the highway.
Now I have checked the wheels are secure and all pumped at the same tyre preasure.
It still feels like the wheels want to fall off.

Could this be engine related instead of wheels?
Maybe Gears or Cam?

Please guys, any advice to know where to start looking would be Awesome

Thank you

Dude check the strut that holds the shock to the chassis. Mine did the same thing on my bakkie. It ussually loosens if u do burnouts and drive hard as it takes strain as u go over rifts in the road. Mine startd off feeln like the car is unstable over slight bumps then it gets more bad as it loosenss more. But it could be something else as well lol but just chek it out

Thanks for the reply mate.

Now I have had everything from Warped brake Disks, to sideshafts including all steering and suspension.

What I need to know now is where to take the car to see what is wrong.

Hey Caps, long time, could be your CV joints, possibly the outers with what you describe. That's the most obvious one for me, specially on a Toy

Hey bud, the boots are an indicator of the outer CV, the inner CV does the shuddering in a straight line and should not damage your boots. Also not saying it is the problem, just a suggestion.

Also, the boots don't break from damaged CV's they break coz of wear and perishing from grease and oil.....

When checking u again?

OK so is the CV's not connected to the Sideshaft? or am I confussed?
Will be going to AutoWiel and "shox and suspension centre" to see what the problem might be.
Three things are standing out at the moment.
Warped brake disks; Sideshaft/CV ;Very bad balancing.

Thanks for all the help peeps.

After thought....
What would be using excessive Transmission fluid?
This is the Fluid for the powersteering.
Have used 500ml in one month.

We all try to save some bucks by trying to solve the prob on our own but when u think it could be a serious prob. Id rather fork out a few rands and take it to a suspension specialists... They would analyse it for u

Warped brake discs will only shudder when braking.
Not while driving or accelerating.

As for your afterthought, automatic transmission fluid(the red one?)mmmm if you have gone through a 500ml bottle in a month, then it could be your steering rack seals that are leaking.
It can either leak into the rubber boot and you wont see it,or if the boot is damaged(most cases) you will see some of it on the floor when turning from lock to lock a couple of times.A leaking steering rack can indicate wear and this can also cause a vibration.

Ok so I had a speed whobble with the Ride and did not know what to do.

I got recomended to go to Shox & Suspention Centre, but they were closed on Sat.
Idid find a place close by that does the same work and had a look.

So the Inner left CV is Worn and the Outer is thorn. the right also has some play.

On top of this I have a Transmission fluid leak on the boost pipes, might just be one as the top one is dripping on the bottem, but they are expencive to fix.

Will have to fix her up in this week so IO can be mobile and stuff it up any more.

Thanks for all the help I got from everyone
