S13 or S14

Post by justin »

Background: I had a 200 STi and now a 200Gsi, i dont think ill ever drive anything except an SR20.

I am planning on getting an SX later this year, as i only have one parking bay at the moment. now i always liked the S13, but im not too sure on the 15year old CA18 in there.

Now my problem is that S13s are gettong really expensive close to R50k, adn they were R30k a year ago. and S14s (if you can find one) are around 80k.

so whats the differences between the 2, suspension, LSD, brakes, weight, comfort, etc etc etc.

is the S14 worth the extra 30k

please guys the more info the better,

thanks

the major differences are the motors, SR vs CA...

and the suspension. the s14 is a naturally neutral car when it comes to suspension. when you push it around corners it tends to turn them neutrally, before gently going into oversteer. the s13 is a natural understeering car, and it will push the nose out way before it even thinks about oversteering. thats in stock standard guise mind you.

also the s14 will have less creaks, rattles, etc, and it definitely feels more like a car from the mid 90's than early 90's!

but its those things that gives the s13's more character i think. but often its that character that really pisses me off too!!!!

lol - i dunno!!!!

The S14 feels newer and more comfortable, but it is lacking something; just dono what.

The S13 feels like a sports car, you hear the engine and exhaust more, it gives better response and you can feel the road at your finger tips.

It will be your own personal taste and will be which car you prefer more.

The sx is lighter and with 50:48 weight distribution it makes the back light  . The S13 chassis flexes a lot because of the thin C pillar so strut brace are a necessity i think. The S14 is heavier and you can feel it when you in a corner.

The interior of the S13 is great providing you don't want to put any one bigger than 5 foot in the back. If you get one in leather thats a bonus. STD steering wheel is cool :D ( thanks Freddie still loving mine).

Ummm I had my interior totally redone... I'll post pics on the weekend...

S13 feels cooler, looks like a sports car and not mistaken as a 2 door camry 8)

BUT I would buy an S14 any day, due the fact that its newer and that it does have the SR advantage, although we all here know the CA is actually a baby skyline engine :P And you get also get all the performance parts off the shelf - you must just know where to look!

The disadvantage of a S14 is you'll need to so much more $$$ if you want to mod it, and you will run into the same problems that nearly every S14 owner i've met had... Engine problems... It's not just S13 guys that have problems talk to some the S14 guys here, they have just as much problems... Some of them have TOO much pride to bitch on this forum about there problems, but I have spotted them on other forums and even overseas forums.

Overall either way you go its a HELLA GOOD CHOICE.

Word of advice, if you planning to lease the car from the bank, and you know its gonna be tight. Rather leave it till you are conformable, or the the S13 route - and spend the extra cash wizely on making sure she's 100% reliable.

Yeah many of us have stepped in this problem, you buy the car its very tight monthly and then it breaks... your car end's up in the garage for 3 months or more...
