Rear main oil seal Ca18

Post by Draco »

Freddy had the same problem after his rebuild and it seems i am going down that road myself.

I replaced my rear main oil seal 2 weeks ago, I replaced it with a german make, I installed it and replaced everything, drove the car in the air for a minute to see if it leaks and there was nothing.

coming from work the next day, oil leak again....as I did it myself without a lift or high enough rise, I decided I will not do it again. I decided to take it to a company to do, which they did, car came back after they said it's done and not leaking, when I stopped at home....it leaked, took it back, after about a day, they phoned and said it was right, it was the tappet cover....which I checked and it could net have leaked so badly, but they gave it back....at home stopped....and it leaked....

I took it back now for replacement but they need to check crank because they think the crank is eating up the seal, which makes sense but then again...Barend rebuilt the engine and balanced and polished crank as far as I know....so how can that be...

It could also be the crank riding the seal because of some problem in the engine....but again....how....engine was rebuilt and balanced...

Freddy replaced his seal 4 times and it still leaked....can anybody shine some light here?

Are you sure it is engine oil and not gearbox oil?? I have had it before when the tappet covers leak and it runs down the block. Also are you sure the HG is not weaping again??

WRT Barend rebuilding the engine so that cant the problem, you dont know how well it polish if at all... Also on the 2JZs the front seal always leaks, but if you fit the seal correctly it wont, on the 2JZ it is not easy to fit correctly and most people cant so maybe just tripple check it is being fitted correctly.

It is engine oil, smelled it, as for the tappet covers, we sealed it, it's basicly dry.

The thing is the car was standing for longish, when I drove it for the first while there was no leaks, then suddenly it started.

As for installing it wrong, that might be it, I tapped it in, it was the wide seal, so I tapped it in all the way, which the macks said was wrong, then they did it....and it leaks again....

All I can think is that it maight be the oil seal retainer that leaking on it's seal, but thats just a guess....as for the seal hurting the steal crank...I think it's highly unlikely....which thye think might be the case...

I can tell you now, my crank has a groove worn in it from where the seal was sitting. I will have to make sure the seal isn't installed all the way in when it is fitted, so that the seal can seal on a fresh part of the crank surface.

The engine was rebuilt not too long ago...and since the rebuild....I wonder if it drove 5000km's, Barend who rebuilt it would have noticed a grove on the crank, if I am not mistaken the crank was also done by ingeneers....so it does not make sense...
