What have i broken now

Post by Daniel »

Im so pissed off, tired and incredibly dissapointed

Il try to summirize here: For the last 14 months my SX has given nothing but shit. It reached a point where id be suprised if it even made 60kw. due to many things like cashflow and no other car i bought a jap engine.
Gave it a look over and it looked good.

Anyway the headgasket on the current engine gave in so it was finally time to do something about swapping the engine. A mate came to the resque and loaned me one of his cars. This was weeks ago, cant remember how long even.

Did the swap, kept my original turbo because it was supposed to be the one in better condition having 'apparently' had a refurb about 15k km ago.

OMG i drove the car, all the problems i had that just could not be solved where gone! I've never heard a SX idle as quetly and smoothly as this one was. Unbelieveable. Joy had overcome me. It pulled like a train, well it felt like it too me. I was almost too scared to drive it :o BUT...

The turbo started smoking and had a bit of a leak on the waterpump. I was annoyed to say the least. My so called 'rebuld' turbo fooken dying pissed me off. Ok things are going well. new waterpump upgrade the turbo (with waht money  ) and il be sorted. Got home took off the turbo and replaced waterpump, that was just over two weeks ago.

Dropped off my turbo to get a GT28R turbine wheel put on and new seals yada yada. Jeez  was screwed around by the guy from the begging. Eventually i got the turbo back last night only to find that it has just got new seals and bearings, no upgrade  WTF!! he couldnt do it or something :? thanks for telling me so i could have got it done somewhere else  Now im dissapointed, seriously. and then to top it off i managed to lock the keys in the car im using while i was still in the duldrums of the turbo issue. Oh cant forget to add that i had to assemble the turbo myself because bolts had broken off in the Ex. housing and he didnt have time to take them out.

So got to my mate, got the stupid broken bolts out and assembled. put on the turbo. battled atleast two hours on 1 stupid water line  and eventually enough was done to start the car  and it was only 1am too

Cranked the engine over awhile to get oil flowing into the turbo and that, everything sounded normal. Put the fuel pump fuse back and tried to start. well after alot of praying it did eventually kinda start. but it almost refuses to idle, its lumpy as fooken hell. if you try to rev it abit it just wants to die. It even had a "backfire" But it came from the intake somewhere. It was a pretty loud bang, but it came out of the airfilter not the exhaust :? Go to your SX, unplug the AFM and start, that is still better than how my car is running now. Something is also making a noise, really weird type of rubbing noise like a belt rubbing on something :? cant be to hard to find

Anyway by 3am decided to start cleaning up. I dont know what to do. When i get home im going to check if the timing belt jumped a tooth or something, its the only thing i can think of. But it wont be that im sure. What could i have done wrong, putting on a timing belt isnt rocket science.
I even bought a Nissan one with the marks on it just to be sure, i didnt want to take the chance of putting it on wrong, and i have done it a few times before.

HELP!

Im so angry i almost dont care anymore.

and yes thats the summarized version.

dude that sucks huge big hairy ones....

but it sounds like you know what you are doing when it comes to these things. what i mean is most guys wouldn't tackle an engine swop themselves, or finish rebuilding a turbo.

it sounds like the timing is out, but you also sound like you've covered that.

so here is my advice...

never work on your car, or anyone else's, if you are tired. what tends to happen is that the smallest little things that would normally be glanced over, end up really pissing you off. you get more and more frustrated, and you start stuffing things up without even realising it.

and just when you thought you've done everything right, your car misfires on its first crank. at this stage you are ready to fix it with a 10 pound iron mallet on the end of a meter and a bit pole, because you dont care about the car anymore, but you will once you have composed yourself again.

i find that good rest, good breakfast and good coffee, will allow you to look at the problem with a fresh clear mind. and it (the problem) will be staring you right in face, so much so that you might be ready to fix yourself with that hammer for being so silly that you missed it.

oh ya - if you need help just holla, i'm there!!! i can even bring that fan cowling for you!!!

the number of times something hasn't worked because i was tired is too many to count on one hand.

its amazing - you go do something completely different for about 30 mins - perhaps have a nap, have a cold cream soda (read: beer!) play your child/dog/cat/ho/concubine/skelm/wife/fiance'/girlfriend(s)/pet crocodile, watch drifiting videos, etc, etc...

when u return its amazing how easy the job really was once its done with a fresh set of eyes, and two fresh brain cells!!!

Well I hit a bit of luck. Didnt really do much of anything and tada...She starts :?

I drove around terrorizing the neighborhood for awhile to see whats up. A few proplems remain. It has what i can only describe as a light throttle misfire. If i try pull away, or if im just crusing at X RPM, when i just lightly accelerate (like 1-2mm of accelerator pedal) it will misfire and feel kinda flat. Although the rest of the time it feels good.

pretty chuffed, didnt come with it to work just yet, I also was covered in a cloud of smoke once, smelt kinda like antifreeze. but i dont see any leaks and it seemed random. So a little more checking in order.

Last thing is there is this weird *tick tick tick* noise which sounds like its coming from the injector on Cyl. 4 :? its not always there.

Progress is being made :D il start with the basics to try get rid of the miss but overall im happy. :D

it is AAARRRGGHH when the thing just fixes itself - you never sure about if its going to let you down somewhere. I'll much rather find a dead rat in my turbo and KNOW that its fixed than to just try start it again and vrrrrmm...

made me feel a right tit when, after my car was standing for a couple of months (due to me giving up), when i finally got someone over to check it out and he did EXACTLY what ive been doing over and over again and vrrrmm! (well actually i felt both tits, but thats another story altogether - and no, not the guy's tits)

jisss on this forum you must pick your words carefully, innit?!

good ruck then

Ok so while driving around on saterday my heater hose tore open and pissed out all my coolent. So i needed to be towed home
Changed the hose, and those stupid clamps and the other heater hoses aswell.
Yesterday I got to drive a bit more, car was holding back a whole lot after 3k rpm. got home and noticed the vac hose of the fuel pressure regulator has come loose. Havent tested the car again yet tho.

Another issue is my idling all over the show. It will idle really low like at 300-400rpm but then somethimes pick up and idle perfect at 850rpm. Il get to that still.
