It is my gearbox, I can see the nut marks on the body where it hits when I lay under the car.

step 1 lie under car
step 2 have trusted assistant ATTEMPT to pull off
step 3 watch gearbox movement and see fault
step 4 Fix problem.

That sounds so easy but it isn't,laying under the car aspecially to pull away is a problem unless I can find the right ditch to lay in, don't know where to find one of those.

Even I will need to go on a diet to fit under the car... and I'm a skinny ass...

Do what Mr Calibrator said... It will most likely be your gearbox mount... these tend to go

How do I know the mounting has broken, took the bracket that holds the gearbox up off and the rubber that connects to the bracket felt fine.

if its not that one then it might be an engine mountings... there is only 3 mountings for the engine / gearbox setup... and the engine two is the only ones that are left...

Again, how do I know a mounting is broken, it doesn't look broken and the engin doesn't moove abnormally when I rev it, and no I can't fit under the car unless it's jacked up.

The only time you have to worry about engine mounts is if they are leaking oil. That's what it says in the manual.
Also the gearbox mounting doesn't have to be broken or cracked for it to give you exccesive movement.

I think I have the same problem. My gearbox doesn't hit against the car, but when I went under it, I felt the gearbox move little...a little to much. Another thing to check is the coupling in the centre of the drive shaft, movement in that area, will also give you a similiar noise.

My mounting went on my previous car. It's not easy to see the tear and I dont think you can lift it lying under the car even with the bracket off.

Try and find a quiet road, open the door look under the car and pull away hard enough to hear the knock.

This is a tried and tested method for me. :D Just don't let the door decapitate you
