Utter Frustration
Well, it was fun while it lasted, but my car is screwed again. R16000 spent, and I got barely 2000km out of it. The last R3000 spent at Maus only lasted a few days.
Now the bitch is leaking as much fuel as it did when I had to redo the injectors, which cost me R8000. And there is now a terrible knocking sound coming from inside the timing belt cover, plus it barely manages to start. So it's parked off again. Don't think I'll be attending any more events for a while.

Its difficult to say... what to do...
I'd say it would be best first try find out what is causing the problems, many times its things A, B, C causing the problem and you only keep on fixing B because thats the only one visible...
I'd say, what caused the injectors to leak? I know they have some O rings and these can go with time, but Injectors them selfs that are leaking? Not very sure about that.
The knocking sound, if Maus worked on the engine let them fix it... I say not to try and start it, if your timing belt is coming loose or something, you might just end up bending valves...
Where exactly is the knocking sound, I can maybe give you an indication what it is...
To me the problems sound Minor, I can't comment on the knock but if it sounds like its coming from outside the engine, it can't be too bad.

The knocking sound - sounds like someone sitting inside the timing belt cover, and then every second, tapping the cover once with a hammer. You can hear it loudly, even in the car. It could be coming from deeper in the engine, I don't know. Could it be the crank pulley? It's possible - that was quoted at over R9000 to fix! How must I get the car to Maus???
The injectors, asked Maus to redo the seals. There was a slight leak before, now it's like a river flowing. Maus says it's the injector itself that is leaking. They were replaced late last year.
I don't mind a few simple problems here and there, but every single problem costing me R10000 to fix? And then, a year later I have the same problem?!?!?

R9000 no but that is crazy... You can have a new TIP top condition CA18 Built for that price...
Freddy did mention that your crank pulley was damaged, what exactly is wrong there? I know the crank has a key way and pulley as well, on the CA18 engines its common for these to get warn and your timing can get thrown around by this. But its mostly caused by bad mechanics that can't put things back together again
I work in Sandton and live in Centurion, if you want me to come by one evening after work and give my opinion you must just shout

Toby sorry to here about this, my opinion, about the injectors, if they themselves leak get aftermarket injectors that fit your rail, RC 550cc ones cost brand new R600 a peace, if you go lower to say 440 or so you should pay about R500 a peace this brings you to about R2400 excluding o-rings if you need to replace it.
As for the tensioner, I could replace mine from midas for R400, although I didn't need it at the end.
Get as much nolage as you can of what is wrong and then start shopping for prices, there are guys that can work on these cars and can do a good job, Maus is good but I won't take my car there simply because I think they are to pricy, if your problems are only injectors and the tensioner I don't see why you need to spend more than R4000 at the most on fixing it.

Well Maus can't help me - I must tow my car there, which will probably cost me as much as an engine! They went digging for problems in my engine, telling me to replace the crank pulley 'cos its worn (the key way) - R2000 from Nissan, re-machine the nose of the crankshaft - R6000, etc. etc. change the tensioner - R2000. Obviously, when they put everything back, it's created new problems.
Anyone wanna sell me a recon engine?
Vlade, I would really appreciate it if you could come and have a look! I'll PM you my number.
I don't at all mind getting aftermarket injectors, BUT, then I must add on a fuel management system, and then my fuel efficiency will be shot to hell. Not to mention the cost. I've been down this road before. I'll have to try to match up the injectors with what I got. I tried servicing my last set that leaked, and there is NOTHING they can do once it starts leaking - chuck it in the bin.

ya, ok, BUT DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH C COSTS!!!???Vlade wrote: I'd say it would be best first try find out what is causing the problems, many times its things A, B, C causing the problem and you only keep on fixing B because thats the only one visible...
anyway Toby, sorry to hear (although i don't really think there is a little man inside your engine) after my trouble i also had a bad sound that sounded like you describe - turned out to be the thin cover over the crankshaft/water pump that had stripped its moer and was slightly tapping against the pulley. Because it is rather thin it amplifies the sound until it is hair raising. Which goes to show that once in a while its not as bad as it sounds. BUT, if I had taken it to MAUS or anywhere, they would have come up with something BIG and EXPENSIVE (like C)
maybe just remove a couple of covers and thingies and have a closer look - ?
Toby I know that feeling, I had a Rb25 fitted to my car Cost = R45000 (That included a couple of upgardes like turbo, clutch.......) I drove the car for 2 weeks and BOOM 45000 down the drain. Now im getting the motor rebuild with new internals (forged goodies) im on about another R30000.00 so I hope and pray that it will atleast last a couple of years now.
Good luck Toby, hope you find some good tuner somewhere because there are a lot of thieves out there. They just want your money bugger the service!!!!
We should have a poll on the worst tuners and best in SA.
