Low rev rattle

Post by HancoB »

Hi guys I am new here and just got my car a week and one day ago!!!! I am like a 13 year old who got his first kiss from a porn star,he he! I love the car to bits and I barely had it for 3 days before I fitted a BOV and filter. But and a big BUT like those you find on J LO, since I bought the car there was a strange rattle between 2000 and 3000 rpms. It disappears as soon as the boost kicks in and then runs up smoothly through the rev range. I know it might be something small for other people but i'm a perfectionist and I want my car to run Smooooooth.

Plz guys let me know if you can help.

No its not ping, It sounds like something is loose. The guy I bought the car from put a new motor in on 115 000km and the car is now on 186 000, The car is totaly stock besides my BOV an Filter...but it was there before I did the mods.

I know for a fact that it is not ping coz you would get brown smoke out the back. It sort of reminds me of my mom driving the VW kombi up a hill in a wrong gear...he he woman drivers...but the problem is that you get is in 2nd to 4th gear only in city driving.

A ping would nessesarily cause brown smoke and deffinately not enough that you would see it. Where abouts on the motor is the noise coming from??

Welcome bro!
Its not to say, that there will be smoke if it is a knock, or ping....
Does the noise stay there if you keep the RPM constand at that Range?
Check the exaust, boost pipes, cables and anything that might be close to the body work, and make sure the dont toutch, and if they touch, that there is no play.
Just me 2c's!!!

O' sorry, something just came to me..........
Check your oil leavel, I know from experiance, that if the oil is just a bit low, it makes that noise, if the oil is full, maby you must try a thicker oil, as long as it is senthetic exc: EDGE, MAGNATECK.
Let me know if you still dont come right!

hmm bugger...

question, If you hold the rpm at say 2800-3k rpm and then release the accelerator, does the rattle get alittle louder?

No it stays the same from 2000 to 3000 then I start hearing the turbo spooling up, leave the throttle->waste gate goes like a mad pigeon->rattle disappears
