SR20DET in RS13

Post by Ero_sennin »

 If I am not mistaken one owner has done this.I think there is pics on the website, anyway.

I would like to try and workout how much this would cost(including all extras) and also get all the info on doing this. What is needed, where to go, with who do I leave this task, etc etc.

Any help, suggestions or even comments on this matter would be highly appreciated.

:D It's simple enough, but its a lot of work, I did my homework as I wanted to do the swap my self, but it worked out just too much for my pocket so here is what needs to be done

* FWD SR20DET Motor, can get from R6400+
* Bell housing to fit to onto stock gearbox R1200 or second hand gearbox R3500+
* Some pluming and water piping changes - can get expensive, high port SR20's boost pipes is nearly the same as the CA, the motor's water inlet is on the right hand side, one can just plumb it back to the left, heater hoses i'm not too sure off...
* Source a SR20DET ECU & Loom - adapting the stock loom is a mission, stock ECU won't work... otherwise R4900 for a Perfect Power XMS, tune in will be at least R1500
* SR20DET flywheel and clutch, Flywheel will come with motor, but you will need a new decent clutch and thus the flywheel will need to be skimmed for safty
* when sourcing the motor make sure you find one with all the mounting brackets and stuff as these might not be the same as the CA
* The turbo from the import motor will most likely be shot, so that thing might need to be reconned... bargen at least R1800

Then as with all import motors its a black box and don't know what you getting... You got first hand experience with this :?

Ummm people that can do it... I would recommend Snail Convertions in Randburg

Frank and Mike has done this, you can bargain in the range of R20 000 to R25 000 and about a month and a half without your car should things get problamatic.

My advice...put in an aftermarket management system, reason...it gets rid of all those sensors and shite witch almost always give you a headace plus gets rid of the 4 coil packs, replace gaskets with proper copper ones and if you wanna spend the money replace pistons and stuff with forged pistons and stuff, you will be able to handel more boost hence get your power where a 2l motor would run and your engin will be heavy tuff making it hard to brake.

Why would you want to do this mod?? There are guys in Japan, Australia, UK, USA, etc. that turn out 650rwHp. Now if thats not enough power the SR20DET motor be enough either.

The CA motor has to be built up with forged rod, pistons ect ect to cope with that sort of power where the SR can handle alot more power with standard internals than a CA would

The CA has reliably cope with 200FwKw, I know a few guys is Australia that have 200RwKw and the car is as clockwork. If you are going to spend that much money is changing the motor, rather buy pistons, rods, sort the crank out and put needle roller bearings. Then the CA would handle much more power than the SR. In my oppinion the CA is a much better motor, if you have a look at the design of it there is no comparison between the 2.

With forged only Pistons and stock bearings the CA can handle 400hp reliably... if tuned correctly...

The Pistons is the only weak point... The Rods can do 450hp before they start bending...

I think Phinx is selling his CA with forged internals and stuff, if any one is interested drop him a PM...

the thing is my previous engine broke a piston or something due to detanation, I replaced the engine with a CA wich is working but there are a few dodgy things that I dont like on the current engine so I would rather replace the engine, but first do a rebuild of sorts on the one I purchase(seals etc etc..)

I was wondering if anyone has heard of an S13 with a Maxima-like (VQ or VG) engine in it? I love the 3litre engines from Nissan, and I would love the torque...

is the engine taller or will it fit?

(i didn't say that I'm not gonna drop a blower on it afterwards)

IMO...i think the SX shell is far too big for a 4 pot engine....and too heavy. The original idea by Nissan Japan wa sto shove a N/A strait 6 into it,but due to certain factors..this was scrapped and a turbo 4 pot added!!!
so thus....in the term now that i got my SX...my aim is to stick to the original idea of NISSAN JAPAN..and shove a strait 6 turbo into it!
I just think that the CA and SR engine have to "WORK" far too hard to pull the big body around.....wereas the 6 cyl turbo makes the same power with absolute MINIMAL efforts....thus resulting in super reliabilty(as engine doesnt work at all) and big power!
negative is that yes...it does become nose heavy for drift...but a slight suspention tweek and yoiur good.....plus with drifting and the new motor...u STEER FROM THE REAR!!!

don't really think the body is too long... a shorter wheel base car would not have handled the same, thus making it more agile, of you oversteer with such a car it requires very quick steering, the long wheel base the S range is known for makes very easy to control your car in a slide...

The engine bay and nose might be to long, but the wheel base is perfect!...

It does kinda make you wonder why the engine bay is so big and why an RB motors fit in there effortlessly... maybe Nissan did have a different intention with the car like turbophonic said

I agree with VLADE.
The car is long, but weight is the same as a 1996 toyota corolla.
Steer From the Rear !!
