Moving Front brakes to the back?
any body know if its possible to move front calipers + discs from the front to the back on an S13. And how much hassle would it entail.

yeah, the contact patch with the discs on the front is waaay bigger than the rears, even though the rear discs are bigger.
you also wouldn't be able to use the front discs on the rear.
leaving your caliper with too much contact to fit on the rear disc properly, so thats why its not a great idea!
the rear calipers from the R32/Z32 chassis are much better for improved rear braking. they fit in the right place (no mods) and with R32/Z32 rear discs you can keep the handbrake system.
the discs for the Z32 are R1690.00 each at nissan new!!! rather expensive i'd say, which is why mine aren't on the car yet!!!

where do the front abs sensors sit tho?Vlade wrote:No the back ABS sits on the diff and not by the hubs like the front ones...
Don't think you'll be able to move the front brakes to the back, calipers way different, like VC said the handbrake has a drum brake system inside the back caliper.

on the front it looks like this, check out this picture of the hub

see the nodges that is where the ABS sensor picks up
on the rear
look closely at the following pics, you'll see where the propshaft connects on the second pic, there is tiny hole on the side (before the mounting) that is where the ABS sensor goes, the first one doesn't have that hole

no abs

I haven't moved my front discs and calipers to the rear, but I have disconnected all my ABS plugs though. My car has none of its original electronics, and breaking is still excellent. I have driven the car in wet, dry, sandy conditions without the ABS and I still admire the breaking force and accuracy of my SX compared to my friends golf iv gti. No matter how much power you have to control, if you are not an experienced driver, or drive like an idiot you will cause an accident with or without ABS.
Getting back to the disc subject. The ABS is not the biggest problem, the drum side of the rear disc thats missing on the front is the issue.

thats what i was saying...
the rear disc has an integrated drum brake that is your parking (emergency) brake.
if you try to put front discs on the rear then, you will lose the parking brake. nevermind the fact that the height of the two discs differs greatly. it wont be an elegent mod, and it wouldn't be one that would go for.
these are the calipers i have for the rear of my car.

the original is on the left, the 2 pot caliper on the right.
they are two pot fixed calipers and should greatly improve the braking efficiency of my rear setup. i have installed them yet, because i need the rear discs from a 300zx as the original we have are way to small by way of diameter and thickness!!!
you go from a 10.2 inch non-vented disc to an 11.6 vented disc - with 2 pot calipers instead of floating calipers its a huge improvement!!!

i imported (its a technical term for my parents brought it back from) NZ. i paid the guy NZ$450 for a set of 4 calipers (4 pot fronts and 2 pot rears). it should've included the discs too, but that would've made it too heavy to carry onto the plane.
so i didnt pay shipping costs, and customs let it through as a gift.
so i would bank on about 3 grand, obviously depending on initial purchase price, shipping and customs duties.
