Noise Problem
Hi Guys
I've got a serious noise comming from my engine when it reaches 2500rpm and gets worse as it revs higher. It sounds as if it's comming from the head. Am not driving enymore with it though, till I fix it up.
Do any of you know what it might be? It's on a SR20DET. I am clueless...
I had a look at the cams, but don't see anything strange there.

strangely enough we had this same problem last night at the drift track.
it was an s14 with a s13 SR20det blacktop (the flat one without VVT).
it was making the strangest noise, sometimes even on idle, sounded like a tapping or knocking of some kind. it was erratic, and at times could be heard all through the rev range.
the driver thought it might be detonation, but it wasnt.
we listened to everything with a trusty long screwdriver, and found the problem on spark plug 4. when we open the plug cover, you could actually feel the tapping on top of coil 4.
we removed the coil, but the plug looked fine, that is... until we removed it. the ceramic part of the plug had loosened off of the metal part of the plug, and it was bouncing up and down on compression/decompression strokes!!!
replaced it and it was fine.
my point is - sometimes these noises can be very decieving. you need to pinpoint the noise, and tell us more about it, before we can help with diagnosing the problem!

there are many things that it could be.
chemcool's crrrr was most decieving. it might have been lifters, it might have been the PCV (?) valve, it might have been the idler pulley, or the tensioner pulley, and in the end he had to rebuild his engine...
oh wait, that might scare the crap out of "S13- S14 Conversion".
sorry dude - but we need to narrow it down!

Didn't really scare me. I'm gonna do the engine anyway, from pistons, bearings etc. It sounds as if the plug problem could be it, it's also at plug no. 4. It's completely still until it reaches 2500rpm. Will have a look tonight and let you guys know. Really hope it's nothing serious, it just sound very bad. Thanks for all the advice.veecee wrote:there are many things that it could be.

at the risk of being told off for spamming...Vlade wrote:bearings maybe...
If I was you... I'll check the timing belt gear check for any loose pulleys, check that you have enough oil... maybe an oil change and when doing so check for gold shavings might be an indication of running bearings...
perhaps thats the reason nissan charges so much for spares????

Ya, I think it could be made out of gold. They are crazy with their prices. If the prices would be lower they will sell more parts and then maybe make some money.veecee wrote:at the risk of being told off for spamming...Vlade wrote:bearings maybe...

Although, truth be told, ChemCool and Vlade and I were CONVINCED that my engine had bearing knock when we heard it, but it turns out it was a loose pulley.
Do some elimination first before assuming the worst. Take off belts to remove accessories from the equation. Rev while in neutral and car not moving to isolate drive-train noises. Open cover and remove coils and inspect plugs, etc. Even unplug one cylinder at a time to see if the noise is restricted to a specific cylinder. Remove tappet covers and inspect for damage. All of this is way easier than hauling out the engine and finding out it wasn't bearings afterall...

Looked at the plugs
No problem there. I listenned with screw driver and it sounds as if it may be comming from the pistons or bearings. I'm gonna take the engine out anyway to replace the pistons with Arias, so then I'll have to replace the bearings as well. If the noise is still there after that
then I give up. I'll go through eveything when I overhaul the engine.
