The resonator on the side of the stock air box? What is it doing there? What HAPPENS if you remove it. Once removed, what if any influence will there be on the science of the airbox?
Ok now I have done HUGE research with this same thing.

the reason it is there is to stop that vacuum noise of the motor. If you remove it on our cars you will hear the turbo sucking the air. Same as on a NA car, you hear the motor sucking, the characteristic sucking sound of a cone filter. The cone filter it self doesnt cause this noise, it is the removal of the sound deading box.

So if you enjoy the sound of the turbo swollowing all the air it can get remove it.

Ok I follow that. Will we loose valuable air while this sucking happens?

No you won't. As long as you seal the hole up properly, once you remove the resonator, it will be fine.

This sounds like some cheap porn forum.

stick with my arguement... would you rather suck hot air or suck through a restriction?? If you suck hot are the incooler should sort it out anyway. If you are sucking through a restriction the turbo needs to work harder and in turn makes more more heat.
Unfortunately your argument is faulty.
The intercooler is only about 70% efficient maybe 80% for a very good one.
If you start the air out 5deg hotter it will still be 5deg hotter after the intercooler.

Reducing the intake air temps will raise power in 2 ways
1st cooler air is denser.
2nd cooler air does lowers the detonation threshhold of your motor allowing for more timing and more boost to be run.

Resonator boxes do reduce induction noise but not by 100% plus they are a huge disruption in the airflow thus causing a restriction. You will have an increase in induction noise without it but not to the point where you will hear the turbo sucking in air as the airbox and air filter still deaden the sound.

Foam filters unless they are gooped thoroughly are an excellent way to destroy your motor in short order.

I've seen the poor filtering that foam filters provide, yet so many big names produce them (GReddy, HKS, Piper... to name a few) guess they aren't meant for our dusty conditions.

Personally I would go back to a oiled paper filter if I could, its proven to have the best filtering, but it is restrictive to airflow... I guess what one have to do is find a balance... They have proven that these el-cheapo cone filters don't provide such a dramatic increase over paper filters (not oiled paper) its mostly the resonating boxes that cause the restrictions.

What I'm personally gonna do is use a cone filter (decent brand like BMC or K&N) but block it off from any hot air, or use a CDA either way you can't go wrong.

Yes it is not 100% correct. But if you are sucking through a restriction the turbo will have to work alot harder to get the same air in and inturn creating more heat. So I think think this is much of a muchness.

I saw a template somewhere on the net that does this exact thing. The drawing was detailed enough to send for laser profiling. Then you just rivet it on and paint. I will try look for it, think it was on the nissansilvia website.

Thats the one  . Only thing with fitting that is you have to paint it, withe means masking up everything in the engine bay just to give it a paint.

I am in the process of fitting a CDA to a S13 and it fits perfectly next to the fuse box and draws air from behind the bumper through the hole left by the Intercooler removal.

What is a CDA  ???

CDA - carbon dynamic airbox - if my memory of endless reading of car magazines is correct!

and here's an idea - if you paint the blarry thing before you rivet it then you dont have to blarry mask every blarry thing. use it ??? dont use it???

Problem is you will still see the rivets and it will look like a after market thingy. From my experiance, do thing right the first time or you will always be looking and wondering what it would of been like if you had done it properly.

Guys, I have a K&N cone filter which I used for one weeks driving (~100km), the cleaning chemicals (new), the adapter and a hand-made bracket (needs painting/chroming) that I am not using. Everything cost me ~R600.00. Any takers, any offers welcome. Sorry for posting here.
