The big thing about Garrett turbos are the ball bearing center and being water and oil cooled.
The ball bearing versus the journal bearing difference is huge! You really cant compare the two! For one the responsiveness of the ball bearing is ten times better than your journal. In other words you can go much larger turbo with garrett and recieve allot let turbo lag! Thats a huge bonus! GT28RS turbo is larger than a stock T28 turbo, however the gt28RS will be spooling allot quicker...ballbearing versus the journal bearing.
Reliability also comes into play! garrett ball bearing turbos can handle huge amounts of boost non stop! And Im talking about boost here...2bar plus!
Journal bearing cant take that type of punishment! They just wont last as long on high boost applications. Fitting a turbo and be able to make good power is the easy part....getting it to make power reliable is a whole different story!
I spent R50k on a plain motor swop....not making huge power but making it reliable 200kw on the wheels everyday.
Im not saying other turbos are crap. Go for what suits your pocket. If you go for the "truck" turbos dont go for a high boost application, keep to 1 bar boost. Also expect to have allot of lag if you go for a large turbo, otherwise stick to a smaller turbo with less lag....
In the long run I just think saving up and bying a proper Garrett will save you money on turbo rebuilds.
I didnt have the money for a garret so I stuck with the stock turbo untill I could afford it....unfortunatly the car was sold before then!

im sorry, that simply is not true.. example, garrett plain journal turbo's fitted to bmw diesel turbo's typicaly run 22psi day in day out..Journal bearing cant take that type of punishment! there is no denying the responsiveness of a ballbearing turbo though.. i agree, go with what suits your pocket, but do remember you get what you pay for.. a cheap knockoff turbo is going to last exactly as long as you think it will

Come on....22psi = 1.5bar boost. As it stated...2bar plus boost is the issue at hand. Show me a journal bearing turbo that will boost 2bar and up just as reliable as a ball bearing turbo? Thats why I said, play it safe and boost a journal bearing turbo 1 bar to ensure it lasts. You can boost it more however that will shorten the lifespan of the turbo by allot.
Also BMW turbo or modern world turbos (especially diesel turbos you cant compare to the truck turbos we are talking about. Tecnology with these turbos are past what we are discussing).

i must admit that i dont have the hard evidence to back this up, but some rebuilt journal bearing holsets that i have been researching apperently can run over 2bar boost, ive read this on a couple sites, but since no one here has tested them who knows...
it also depends on what application u looking at, im building a dailly driver so im not gona be driving on 2bar boost all day
not saying that i will be getting a holset and only looking at a turbo upgrade after my motor swop, but the holsets are cheap, reliable, and can make good power, and depending on size ive heard that the smaller ones spool relatively well and quikly.
at the end of the day i think i would rather chance a holset and if it f*cks out buy another or even ANOTHER again, and it would still work out cheaper then a garret
(but if i had an endless budget i would go garret
