Turbo Choices for the SR20DET
I'm looking to upgrade the stock turbo on my S14 with the SR20DET Blacktop VVT engine.
I'm aiming for +/- 260kW at the flywheel (currently have 220kW). I want to minimise turbo lag and have the lowest boost threshold possible. The car is mainly for street use an occasional track days.
Would like the Garrett GT2860RS or GT2871 but these are prohibitively expensive so I have been looking at the following:
- T28/T3: Turbine 0.64 A/R, Compressor wheel 60-1.
- T3/T04E: Turbine 0.64 A/R, Compressor A/R ???, Compressor Trim ???
Is anyone using these turbos and what are your opinions of them?
Which is the best trim and A/R for the T04E compressor?
Any other recommendations?
Any help would be much appreciated.

T04E will lag like hell... unless you have lots of work done on your head!!!
T28 BB it the cheapest... but for 260kw... you need lots of money~!
the best Turbine i experience is the HKS GT3037s-pro~ but that even more expansive then the GT2860RS ...
so the conclusion is nothing is cheap!!!

I've heard the HKS GT-RS is as quick in spooling as the GT28RS and good for 400BHP, I was recommended it by a mate here in the UK.
Actually just found this link:

I think I will probably go with that when I go for more than 280BHP (after I stretch all my standard stuff).

Well if you want one, I have a T3/T4 with AR.48 ex housing and AR.50 comp housing, Brand new in the box still. R3000 and will spool a crap load quicker than a AR.60. This one should pop in round 3000RPM on an SR20DET, which is what I was planning it for.

Thanks for the responses.
Unfortunately the HKS GT-RS and Garrett GT2860RS are out of my budget at the moment.
I have heard good reports on the T3/T04E but very few are firsthand.
Is anyone using a T3/T04E on their SR20DET?
If so, what A/R turbine housing are you using and how is the performance, especially in terms of lag and boost threshold?

A word of advise with them copy turbos. Make sure you buy a correctly spec'ed one. These turbos are often just slapped together with which ever housings and wheels are available. My TB28 (T28/T3) I found out is now too small and can only do 0.4 all they through the rev range. Turning up the boost make the boost go up but then tapers back down pretty quick.
Make sure the housings and wheels are at least as follows
Intake: 46.5mm inducer and 60mm exducer (T3 60Trim) with at least a .42AR housing
Exhaust: T28 wheel with a .64AR or .86AR housing.
A friend got a .36 exhaust housing on his and now has alot of boost creep in the longer gears because the turbo does not flow enough.
I got a .86 exhaust housing but only got a 40mm inducer (45trim as far as I know) causing my turbo to run out of puff and over the choke line.
All I am saying is make sure the one you buy can do the job... compare it to the actual specs of the proper one.

I have it fitted to my SR20DET and @ .9 bar with a stock redtop I have 191 kw's. It is a WR280 Turbo , if you want more.. go with the WR380 !Charlvdw wrote:Mine was rather lekker , i actually found it difficult to keep the boost below a bar. And that was on the CA.

How do you check the trim on the blades of the exhaust and compressor housings, does that represent the angle of the blades?
