SR20DET notch top or top notch :)
Hi All
Am new here!
Have been doing a bit of reading through most of the threads.....
Have seen that some people are saying they have a SR20DET notch top or top notch (not sure which is the correct way)!
Google search only comes up with a red top and black top!
What are the most common in the SA registered S14's?
Main differences I can see between the red and black is that the black has better pistons and a port design to allow for better flow.
So joudging from what I have read the black top is the better of the two......am I correct?
Can anyone add anything else to the main differences.

People run about 400BHP out of them on standard internals, anything above you really should consider forged internals.mr lee wrote:Thanks! So notch top it is
What is the most power (reliable and on pump fuel) that anyone has ever gotten out of the black top with bolt on mods?
Anyone here drift their S14? What mods have you done etc.?
I drift mine and full spec can be seen here:
www.kaihatsu.co.za
Im sure they are people making 400hp on a stock SR, but for how long?djtreble wrote:Cooling, maintenance and proper mapping is your friend![]()
I'm not pulling it out of my arse either, there are poeple here in the UK running 400 bhp on stock internals. You make your own decision though.
Stock head gasket lets go at 230-240kw
Pistons usually crack at 260-270kw
Maybe the British know something the Ausi’s don’t… that’s what Ive read many times on the Ausi forums.
Not sure hey, you'll find that if someone runs 400 they won't run it on a reliable daily basis.
I personally am not going to run more than 350bhp for my drift s14 so not really going to be able to test the length of time you can run it on stock internals.
But if I build an SR in the future for 400 I will be able to test the amount of time. Run it till it fails then upgrade the internals so that I can learn the limits from first hand experience.
