Turbo Elbow saga

Post by Phinx »

As all turbo guys know opening up the exhaust system on a turbo car can release allot of hidden power.
Now performance exhaust systems on the CA18DET are a dime a dozen but we always had to deal with that ugly restrictive "Turbo Elbow" while the SR guys had a huge amount of elbows to chose from.

Now When I bought my "turbo elbow" I heard from everyone how the elbow would hit the gearbox or frame rail so since I have a spare CA18DET I would like the measure this and confirm if this is true or not.

So I installed the Elbows to compare how they site and to measure to confirm it could fit

It seems that the exhaust will need to be modified or the Triangular Flange cut and reworded

Yeah that stuff is actually meant for the SR20 motor...

Same went for my tubular manifold... Needed to have my R5000 tig welded X-Force exhaust modified... You can imagine my degree of PISTNESS!

I also took out my CA downpipe & pu in a standard SR downpipe.

The flange had to be re-welded or positioned to fit the exhaust.
Mine also clears the gearbox nicely, but remember that if it clears the gearbox to well, then it starts to hit the side of the firewall underneath the car.

It only hits the gearbox with the stainless manifold.

It came with the exhaust.. My downpipe runs from the turbo to about the middle of the passenger door

But that is not a diffused down pipe?!

What difference does a tubular manifold make to turbo spool time and power??

is it not possible to have the mounting brackets of the exhaust modified to reposition the exhaust itself to fit the flanges as they are???

From my measurements it will clear the frame rail, just cut the exhaust and have it re welded and it will fit.

I will complete my measurements tonight

That downpipe is very sexy only one small problem the angle the small pipe joins at will cause as much turbulence as having the wastegate joined.
if you are going to pay money for a split downpipe make sure the wastegate pipe merges smoothly.
