S14 SR20DET rebuild

So the SR ran a bearing and needs a rebuild...
Hopefully I can share some of the process here and give a bit of a run down...

Done so far:

Towed to workshop (my parent's... they have a garage I dont... :lol: )
Will start stripping this Saturday... then pull it out and rebuild...

Spent so far:

Rocker cover gasket : R350 (Nissan)
Complete gasket set SR20/SR20DET : R1250 (Mr Mag Man Benoni)


most of the gaskets in the kit is the same as the DET but I will not be using the rocker cover gasket (DE/Redtop) and head gasket (fitting a decent one).

Head gasket is being replaced with a Greddy/Cometic one... not sure about the thickness yet tho...

Tommorow is official strip and pull it out day... am actually excited... even tho it is raping my wallet... :lol: Will definately be taking some pictures... I think this is not gonna be a quick thing... Is really gonna cost me a arm and a leg... so far it looks like R10000...

didn't even realise untill you mentioned it... my bad... this thread has now gone from a PG rating to full on R18SNVP.... HEHEHEHEE

no this is a complete rebuild... a like new rebuild for the bottom end and the cylinderhead will get cleaned rebuilt and I will probably flow it myself like all my other cars i've rebuilt... 8)

OK so the motor is still in there but I did remove all the wiring and piping.

To do this week:

Remove Aircon pump
Remove power steering pump
Remove Alternator
Remove Starter
Remove Radiator and hoses incl heater hoses
Remove gearbox bolts
Remove Bonnet
Sling and loosen engine mounts
Remove motor from engine bay

OK time for a update.

Removed:
Aircon pump (dropped down not completely taken out... saves redo of aircon)
Powersteering pump (lifted out the way no disconnected.)
All belts removed
Starter removed.
Alternator disconnected only... (should be able to remove engine without removing it first)

Next week:
Loosen all gearbox bolts
Loosen all engine mounts
Sling and remove engine and mount to motor stand for disassembly.

Sorry no pics will take some the weekend before I start.

Eish..... this is taking you waaaay too long.....

between 3 cars I've removed and installed either a CA or an SR 8 times in the last 6 months, it used to take us about 5 hours to strip and remove everything and get the engine out, now its closer to 1 hour, 2 max, the engine removed/install itself is closer to 20 mins.

Some advise:
Removed/install the engine and gearbox together, this means you need to remove the radiator as well as the first part of the prop and the gearbox crossmember, as well as draining gearbox oil, disconnecting sensors, slave cyl etc, you might need a load leveler to tilt overything on the way out, but we've managed with your hands quite well so far. Now this sounds like more work, the alternative is that you struggle for 3 hours trying to line up the gearbox input shaft to your clutch plate inside the engine bay where its 100 times easier to do this when both are out the car.

Label all your electrics, and screw bolts etc back into their place as much as you can, the ones you cant, put in a clearly labelled container, I say clearly labelled because "lft fnt alt brkt" makes sense to you today, wont make sense in a months time when it goes back in.

I know it is taking long but I only have about 2-3hours every odd Saturday to do this... well for now... I do not work at night since you usually just lose stuff... anyway... I am taking as much time as possible to ensure I do not miss anything.

I have marked everything my putting it in millions of little seperate containers... :wink: don't worry my father is overseeing this project and he has over 40 years of working on all sorts... so I doubt we'll really stuggled with anything... besides I have already rebuilt quite a list of engines already so will make sure everything is lekka :wink:

Hi dudes,

I think it is about time I update this :oops:
This has really a project long term and was never intended to be. However my stupidity with forced induction engines has resulted in this really taking long. I have had to do my homework to ensure I build a good reliable motor. (I hear a lot of gents here sniggering at the impossibility... :lol: ) However I do need to try my best at least to acheive this.)

So here is what's new to the stock pile in the boot awaiting the rebuild:

- Cometic 3 layer metal head gasket - research has proved this the most commonly used gasket and also most reliable.
- Forged rods with ARP bolts
- Stock airbox (which will be modified slightly :twisted: ) - http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/airfilter/airtest1.htm - A VERY interesting read indeed.

Soon:
- Some new pistons (as soon as I know what size I am fitting)
- ARP bolts and studs on the head and crank
- ACL Race bearings on the mains and big ends (as soon as I know what size the crank is getting cut)
- FMIC - intercooler in the boot but just checking pipe run.
- HKS SSQ
