Engine coolant.

Post by Slide 'em Wide »

I have heard so much about coolants, pro's ,cons and i am left completely confused.

Some guys say they only run coolant in their radiatiors, Others say coolant is the devil incarnate.

Does anyone have some ideas or stats and which brand etc?

All info and advice much appreciated.

And please keep this thread *flame suit* free

In any alloy engine, or even with an alloy head you must run coolant, or antifreeze. Primarily as a corrosion inhibitor.
Normally they should be mixed 50:50.
I've heard that some racers run 100% coolant, but Its not something I would try.
Beware though, if you top up a 50:50 mix with just water it will get to a point where the reduced concentration of coolant/antifreeze can cause worse corrosion than if just water were used. So ideally top up with a 50:50 mix, a once off small amount of top up with just water will be alright though.

Yeah, you won't go wrong with a good brand name like castrol.
Coolant isn't something that needs to be replaced on a regular basis. Maybe once every 5 years or so, or otherwise only if it becomes contaminated with oil or dirt.
