It is not a train smash, what happens with yours now is only when the water out of your radiator to the inlet of the engine reach the certain digrees it switches on the fans, where if it was on the bottom pipe it would switch on earlier because of the hot water out of the engine.
If it is not to much of a hassle my opinion would be to shift the switch to the bottom to save you a few digrees, mine only reached about 3/4 to the halfway mark on a very hot day and in heavy traffic, normally it ran halfway between the 2nd line mark and halfway mark.

I measured the water pipe thickness down there....then I went to a radiator place, asked them to make me a size smaller copper pipe(to fit into the existing hose) about 200mm long with a place where you can screw in the temp switch(which you give them the size), then I cut a piece out of the existing pipe on the straightest piece just enough to fit the copper pipe and the clamped it in place with hose clamps.

i had mine in the same place as Dr G's.
remember i had an sandwich plate (25mm thick) engineered to fit in there, then i drilled and tapped holes for the sensors.
although i know its not ideal, it worked perfectly fine up to the day i sold the motor. water temp never went over halfway, ever. hot day or not!!!
