this might be a silly question, would that gearbox fit a vg30dett (my motor of choice) ?

ahh.. found it.
rb26dett,rb25det,vg30dett boxes apparently all the same, just different bellhousings.. and in some cases, rear housings.

prolly falls under useless info, but still interesting 8)

Yip 300

They fit on those engines

But bear in mind that according to the information i have the Rb25 box is the strongest , parts
you can rebuild your box with parts from the VG30DETT box,

RB20 and Vg30 boxes are the same

i got a few pics if you interested to see the difference

Nope,

You have 2 gearboxes basically, the smaller thinner pencil gearbox, thats stock on the CA, SR, RB20DET and RB25 N/A Same gearbox different bellhousings.

The second is this one, the bigger fat boy, on the RB25DET upwards and the VG30's

yes please, that would be intersting, tell you why,
i might be interested in the gearbox separate (if you would sell it that way)
but it would have to fit a vg30 wide block (vg30e and vg30de blocks differ!
double overhead cam blocks are wider) the box i have in my sx now has
extremely short ratio's, i have no idea what it came out of..

You could probably get away with his gearbox and your current gearbox bellhousing, but you would need them side by side to be 100% sure.
Also, maybe you want to look at rather changing your final drive (Diff) ratio, that could be the bit thats making your ratios "short" you probably find that the 300zx/cedrics etc had a different diff ratio.

yes , also thought of this, problem is just that there is not that many diff swap options for the sx open to us here in good old sa.. unless you are willing to do major mods.
and importing a pumpkin is frigging expensive, due to weight
