My sx's stutter

Post by Trance101 »

Ok this all starts out with a story,

I was driving along in my sx when I came across a BMW E46 M3 at a set of robots 8) . There were cars in front so I couldn't have a go with him yet, I decided to miss my turn off to my house and follow him. We are traveling down blackburn road when the car in front decides to stop to turn right. Great, here's our chance! :P We are basically at a standstill as the car turns right. I see the rear of the M3 squat as he floors it, I return the favour. I was already rolling forward so I didn't get to launch it, so all I get is lag, lag, lag, then I'm off. :? By this time the M3 is already lengths ahead. I slam 2nd at 7000 and spin the rear tires. Slam 3rd hard and my sx is unhappy with me, it stutters and splutters 3 times , I have to let off gas to get it to behave again. Needless to say the M3 was lightpoles ahead

I stop behind him at the next set of light, we both turn right in North Coast road. The car in front moves aside and we are off again, my sx pulled strong this time no stutter. The M3 still pulled me by lengths tho  obviously.

What would make my sx stutter like that? Its happened before. Only ever at high revs and when I am changing gears fast and let out the clutch hard. Am I just being too hard with my changes... but even though it still shouldn't stutter like that.

I'm thinking that it has to do with fueling. I do have a leaky injector, could that be a cause? I thinking of getting a new fuel pump and FPR, do u guys think that this would help the situation?

The leaky injector could be your problem.
I always tell people to get that fixed ASAP.

I had leaky injectors and due to detonation I cracked a piston and effed up my engine. Vlade can tell you what it looked like.

Nevermind the firehazard it poses.

Im defenately no expert, it could be many things but the first thing that pops into my mind is that when your car "stutters" it could be detonation being picked up.

I think because you at high rpm and the motor is moving quite a bit, you are disturbing the injector plug and that is causing it to inject then not inject and hence your missfire.

lol - fix your leaky injector and then go get some new mounts. less movement on the engine is better, but remember that solid mounts make things horribly uncomfortable for you and your passengers.

nismo mounts = about R1800-00 per pair
jaguar v8 mounts = about R64-00 per pair

not sure how much nissan charges for standard mounts, but i can imagine its quite expensive!

also - i saw in a Partquip catalogue that the picture of the nissan skyline 2.0l (CA20de) mounts look exactly like ours. so that is an option.

while you're at it, get a new gearbox mount. the skyline 2.0l gearbox mount also works.

and seeing as you're spending all this get the following too:

1. FIRE EXTINGUISHER - very important if you dont want to watch your car burning down on the side of the road.
2. FUEL PUMP - you get very nice internal pumps nowadays that fit!
3. FPR - you said you should and you should.

happy spending!

@Ero: I doesn't feel to me like detonation but its a possibility. I'l definitely try get the leaky injector sorted out soon.

@Gary: I don't think that's it, it doesn't feel the same as when the injector plug was coming loose, but it could be that. It feel like long slow 'stutters'. Not as quick as like with the injector plug.

@VeeCee: Not sure if I wanna go for stiff mounts yet, maybe in the future. Ya, I think my plan of action is:
*Fix leaky injector
*new fuel pump
*FPR

(and some time soon I think I should get a fire extinguisher for safety)

I have been looking at a Walbro 255 Fuel pump and a nismo FPR. Are these good options or are there better options available?

If u spending so much cash on your car, R150 for a Fire extinguisher is nothing. Think about all the cash going up in smoke (excuse the pun) when your car is on fire...

I'm so paranoid, I have one each of my cars, not taking any chances.

they seem like very good choices to me.

i have a walbro 255l/h, and a FPR. its not a nismo (cos i thought that was a bit expensive) but it does the job very well

Maybe Spark Plugs? just an idea, easyer to try first. Mine was doing that high revs and one of my plugs was finished. New set R70.

come to think of it...

rat's comments reminded me. before you go about doing anything drastic, double check the basics first.

a friend of mine once said that before you start fiddling and searching for stuff, service the engine first. that way you can eliminate those kinds of things!

and it happened to me. i had a horrible misfire to sort out. i readied myself for a full day of troubleshooting (cos thats how these engines can be!) and i started by buying serviceable parts.

it turned out that the first plug i tried to replace was totally stuffed, and as soon as it was replaced the car ran fine again.

put it in your pipe - use it? dont use it?

This exactly why I want to follow the vc route with all pipies removed and the gremlin route to get new coils and ht wires.
It must be easier then to service and makes things much more easier. I hope.
Coils really becoming old age now, and removing the coils all the bloody time strips the aluminium threads etc.
Also the plug wires are hard and brittle(harness).

The plugs is my car are pretty much brand new BCPR7ES's. So I don't think they are the problem.

About the FPR, is the nismo one worth it? Its is rather expensive for just a FPR IMO. What other options should I consider?

i paid 550-00 for my precision FPR.

and it came with a FP gauge, filled with glycerine!!!

does that make your choice easier?

how much is the nismo one???

What is your guys fasination with FPR?? The stock one does a good enough job. Injectors are rated at 3Bar pressure so why would you want to go WAY over that??
