advance the ignition timing

Post by mario_200sx »

Have any of you advanced your cars standard ignition timing and ran a higher octane fuel for a bit more power.

I was thinking about 5degrees advance?

just scared of detonation! thats why I will run a higher octane fuel.

Dont know it is? How will I know. It will just retard the ignition timing again wouldnt it? if its plugged in?

Although being far from an expert is say DONT DO IT!!! 5deg HOLY COW what octane are you planning on running. Standard knock sensor is a POS anyway.

If you want to do that get water/meth injection and then just dont go cowboy increasing timing, theres a proper way to do things

I find its best to start off with a good base before doing any "power mods" by good base I mean an engine thats running tip top, i.e. no oil/water leaks, no funny noises. Sort out any major problems like smoking or knocking, noisy lifters, overheating problems, the list is endless.

I dont know how guys expect a 16 year old car with 100k - 200k + kms on the clock to react nicely to mods for more power, running 1 bar boost on stock turbo's and intercoolers on hot summers days.

The fact is any problem or "spoeg en plak" fix will become aggrevated as the power and strain on parts increase, an oil leak becomes an oil gusher, a lifter noise becomes a bent valve, a rattle becomes a conrod through a block, you see what I'm getting at? There is no proper way to tell if a parts going to fail, but solving these little problems will help a long way, I havent heard one good story about a person who's bought a second hand SX and started modding it yet, the story always end the same way.

Some DB's out there have someone else to pick up the bill so they go ahead anyways...

And finally, to answer your question, a higher octane petrol should enable you to run advanced timing and higher boost, but these cars also werent designed for our higher ambient temperature, 95 octane is already running borderline in my eyes, so be careful, maybe do a FMIC or bigger turbo, then look at upping the boost....

Thanx Sokar, I think after you an Daniel I will give that idea a skip and opt for the long way!

I am also a true believer in doing it the right way or none at all. A lesson you learn when doing motor racing for a long time. So thats why I asked, first time that I have heard about it and you guys will now better than me!

damn...

i knew there'd be some sensible people out there

yeah its not a good idea. but a dyno tune and perhaps a piggyback or full management can help you to extract the full potential from your current setup.

try to find a good tuner, and not a masturbator!

dont worry dan... i understand!

Or put it this way: w/m = basetiming advance from 15 to 18 deg. Octane = roundabout 120. So, 5 degrees with 102? I dont think so.

Nice post Sokar! Respek!

If this site had an FAQ (any volunteers?) that would be the first thing I'd want on there.
