Gearbox Oil

Post by Phinx »

What gearbox oil do you guys use?

And where did you get it and what was the cost?

Also what diff oil do you guys use?

My gears are grinding , i know the box is on its way out but would like to get a nice gearbox oil to smooth out the changes just a little

make sure you use what the manual recommends...

as in GLI (or is that GLC) or whateverthecrapitis, make sure its:

GLI4 for the gearbox, and

GLI5 for the diff.

doesnt matter if you get a good brand, just make sure it has those ratings!

ashley, put in whatever you can find man.

as long as its rated correctly, and you're happy with the brand name.

i dont remember the brand i used, but i remember it was over R100-00 per litre. you need about 2 litres for the diff.

i think it was called LSX actually...

thats it - it was AGIP LSX. synthetic diff oil made specifically for clutch type of LSD's. something like that!

I think the ratings go from API GL-1 to API GL-5. The cheapies are API GL-5 rated. I bought a Castrol premium oil from AutoZone, only comes in small bottles so I needed 5 or 6, but it was about R25 each. It's rated API-3 to API-4. There was one rated API-1 to API-3, but that was over R100 per little bottle.

ok ok - i looked it up, the ratings are called GL-4 and GL-5. those are the requirements from the sx manual. toby you make it sound like the higher GL ratings are not good oils??? why is that?

many gear oils are rated at both GL-4 and GL-5, so they will work in both the gearbox and diff.

BUT - our diffs are VLSD's and they need a specific type of oil that assists the VLSD in working properly. so you need a diff oil that meets the GL-5 requirements specified in the 200sx FSM, and you need one that is correct for a viscous or clutch type of LSD.

the diff oil i used was expensive at over 100 rand per litre

I don't know if the higher ratings are not good, but since they are cheaper, I assume the lower ratings are better. But in any case, it's best to stick with the manual, which recommends API GL-4.
