the ECU has 5 different diagnostic modes.

also - what do we need codes 64 and 65 for???

LOL - i know. nissan uses common codes across motors which had this type of diagnostic system. so the codes for cylinder 5 and 6, from the RB range of engines!!!
Yes it has. The above is to get to mode three(three light flashes)

Mode I- Exhaust gas sensor monitor (Normal mode)
Mode II- Mixture ratio feedback control monitor
Mode III- Self diagnostic
Mode IV- Switch on/off diagnostic system
Mode V- Real-time diagnostics system.

obviously if he gets code 63 and 64 then he has an RB,so if you get those let my know, then we can swap engines  , the codes are basically the same for all eccs Nissan's, except for certain codes for extra stuff like cylinders and catalytic equipped vehicles etc. but obviously he wont get those error codes for those things

Found the answer to my question.

It's the coil. How do I know this?

Changed the plugs, can last night the car started running on 3 pods again.

Luckily I never replaced the top cover, so I pulled the coil plugs off and the no4 coil was dead. Swapped in a spare and now it's sorted.

Next is that slight intermittend "miss" that seems to come stock on the CA18DET.

Ok so I loosened everything and checked for error codes. The first time I did it, I got code 21:

21 Ignition Signal.

No idea what that means though.

Then after doing it again a few times all I kept getting was 55 which means no faults.

Car definitely has a slight miss on idle which results in somehwat hesitant acceleration. Does this mean it's a mechanical problem?

I guess we will always have the same problems as above. An easy answer is always: It can be more than one thing" Which is thru. The manual dudes, the manual. Dont forget the manual. Read that manual, because you have to start somewhere and start eliminating. Eliminating ek se.
