Tappity noise on startup

Post by Hype »

Howdy all

My friends car makes a tappity noise on startup, does it for about 20seconds then goes away.
He has been told its oil not getting to the tappits quick enough.

Is this true? What could be the causes of thise? Is it an easy fix?

check your oil level... my Polo does that when oil level is low....

Otherwize it can be that your oil is very thick when its cold... maybe using wrong Weight.

Sounds about right, check the past threads for the "Oil" thread.
Diesel power, hmm, yes, I think I'll have some of that.

Sounds like lifters...

Replacing lifters is also like 1.5 hours work.

They do get sticky after a while.

What car?

Little bit more time for car with chain and DOHC. Look at between R30-R45 a lifter...

I must admit I haven't ever priced a SR20DET's lifters...

Also a note, the SR only has 8 lifters total, 4 per side.

SR20DET lifters are around...

wait for it...

R550 PER lifter! Yes, I kid you not. Jarred spent about 6 months to a year trying to source cheap lifters for his S14 - the cheapest were R550 per lifter. However, Nismo200sx managed to source some a little bit cheaper.

Snail did mine for R80 per lifter, and that was with his extra cost added....

The oil is not supposed to drain completely from the system. Some OEM filter have a non-return valve to stop just that. Not sure on the SR and the CA. Maybe I should buy a OEM filter again...

I flushed my SR engine over the weekend to get rid of the crap oil that Maus must have used to top up after the turbo drain pipe broke off. Id did not mix well with the synthetic oil. Made thick blobs (not quite sure how to describe it) and it was a mess to clean by hand. 4L diesel and idle for 1 minute and it is all clean and flushed. Even after a couple hundred km the oil is still clean.
