Oil Catch cans.

Post by Gary57 »

How much oil do you guys breathe??

I had an incident on Friday night where I was driving far faster than I should and my motor decided to spit oil all over my manifold and engine bay. It did this because I had the intake breather pipe connected to the PCV and therefore when under boost that side of the motor could not breathe. Therefore all the breatheing was left to the exhaust side of the motor which would of prevented alot of the oil returning to the sump due to the air coming up and inturn vomited it all of my engine bay.

Now the motor is fine prob only lost 100ml of oil (Im guessing) but it made a hell of mess thats for sure.

How much oil do you guys breathe into those oil catch cans?? Why are they so big, surely if you breathe that much oil you are preventing it from returning to the sump ie. low oil level??

Well that import motor of mine breathed quite a bit, its rings was also on there way...

The last one (calibrator engine) didn't breath that much, but it did cover the hose with a thin lineing of oil... I must show you a pic of inside my manifold, it looks like new aluminum and that after 3000km, just because there is now no way of oil getting into the plunem without passing though the catch tank first.

My motor doesnt breathe much on idle, just a very slight puff. Even when I floor it there is no oil in the breathers besides this 1 time, but thats because of my stupid breather configuration. Where can I get a catch can from?? I would like one like that RB26DETT pic of Andres, the laying down one, I would mount it on top of the tappet cover aswell.

How much oil gets caught in your catch can Vlade??

very little hey... very little i would guess after 3000km it had about 50-100ml in there, but every drop that moves through the lines is getting caught in there, my hoses are clear so i can actually see it.

I would say I must of lost about 100ml or so but then the motor wasnt breathing correctly so that is why is was so much.

Where can I get a horizontal can from??

Maybe source a CA18DE oil seperator which sits between the two VC's.

Then again, catch can looks the business.

there are two VC's??? i thought i was one of a kind!!!

anyway - many people have a drain plug at the bottom of the oil catch can, so that the oil can re-enter the system down at the bottom of the engine near the sump.

or every now and then you can take that oil and just pour it back into the system!

hte vapours from the crankcase will always be full of oil, but its usually just that vapours. if you give them somewhere to collect, they will collect. but gary - your's sounded a bit extreme.

everyones intake is connected to the PCV in some way if its standard. its also connected to the lower crankcase via that stupid hard pipe with a 90 corner in it that always gets clocked with oily crap!!!!

Ja it was extreme but that was because the oil couldnt return down the crankcase ventilation on the exhaust side and the crank could only vent on the exhaust side.
