Thanks! Actually, after all the effort, I found the problem - the idler pulley was loose, and that was what was making all the racket!
Anyway, since the engine is out, it gives us a chance to check the bearings. The sump was clean so I suspect the bearings will be A-OK.

nah - i dont think it would be a hectic job with vlade around!!!
and toby probably is quite handy at that stuff now too.
ah - the joys of learning to do this stuf for yourself!
toby - imagine how much that idler pulley investigation would have cost you if you had sent it to a mecchie!!!!

Ya and nevermind all the additional problems I would be endowed with by said mecchie.
Yea Vlade is super fast with the engine removal! And 4 hands make light work. I reckon if the crane and mount were already assembled (I'd dismantled it and then had to reassemble it), and we'd removed ALL the bolts before trying to haul out the lump
then it would've been done in about 45 minutes.

that beats my slow-ass record by many hours!!!
but then i like to take my time, talk crap, smoke a lot, talk crap some more, and then remove bolt number two.
and then the same before bolt 3!!!
LOL - well done!

It's one of two pulleys the timing belt goes around between the top (cam gears) and bottom (crank pulley). The one is the tensioner pulley (it's spring loaded) and the other is the idler pulley. You only see it once you take the covers off the front of the engine.

So I hauled out the bearings to check them out and this is what they look like:

Any expert opinions on the condition of these bearings? I see some shiny bits on the main bearings, but on the conrod bearing, there's weird markings and scratches. Pic 1 and 3 are mains, the other two are conrods. All this after only 160km?
