95 octane

Post by WarrenS13 »

Ok so i have a real newbie question: :)

How many of u use pump 95 octane, and are there any (major) benefits over 93? I was using 95 for a while, and it was fine, but then my engine started running not so smooth (misfire, stuttering, hesitation). So does the timing need 2 be changed 4 a higher octane or something? Gone back 2 93, and cars running great!!

Thanks guys

Howdy,

The S13 has a "Learning" ECU, i.e it will advance the timing every now and again to see how far it can go and pull it back when it gets detonation. 95 will allow the timing to go more advanced than 93. Putting 95 in will give you a bit better performance (Probably a kw or 2 on the back wheels) but the benefit is you'll have a bigger threshold before hitting detonation.

The misfire etc you had when running 95 might be a symptom of something else that just got aggrevated with 95, I dont see how putting 95 in would cause it to stutter. What plug gap you running? You also might wanna look at a "Spring Clean" Thats about 4 cans of carb cleaner and about 3 intimate hours with all you intake plumbing!

Hey thanks sokar. You're not gonna believe this, but I only found out TODAY, like right now, that my car has a dastek unichip  hehe, better late than never i guess. the guy i bought it from said it was completely stock! LIAR!!!

Ok, so would that have anything to do with it? Car also doesn't have an intercooler, getting a stock one fitted, would anything have 2 change on the unichip 2 accomadate the intercooler? Sorry i have o many questions!

Thanks :D

S13 ecu isnt "learning" AFAIK
you'll have a bigger threshold before hitting detonation

Wouldnt know about the unichip, perhaps its best to get it 'tuned' again after you have your cooler

Without an intercooler your car is probably detonating all the time. Running 95 isnt an option on that car.

Thanks daniel, calibrator

@ Calibrator:
After I fit the intercooler, will 95 be ok? Also should i get the car tuned on a dyno after fitting it?

Thanks :)

What Calibrator meant by 95 is not an option... its a must! :D Safer and can't harm your engine.

If you check on your Fuel filler flap, it actually says 95 leaded, but we only had 93 inland, we finally got 95 unleaded recently (at the pumps), 2 years ago, I think.
according to research I did, unleaded is compatible with the CA, valves,etc... incase someone was wondering, anyway not running an intercooler is really bad if there is no other form of cooling , I reccommend if you really have to drive the car keep it under 3000rpm, and get it sorted ASAP, or your engine might break into little pieces, I'm just wondering why someone would have removed the stock cooler and not replace it with something.

I was running leaded fuel till I came across this forum... never knew the car could run on unleaded...

Ummm there is a few garages around that sell 95 but you have to go and look for it... I can remember getting 100ron pump gas, but I think only Sasol sold it

HeHe vlade! Thats what i thought until my car started feeling sick! Fortunately the BP by my house has 95. But I'll hopefully go back 2 it once I've got your spider-infested intercooler

Thanks guys 4 all the input, really helpful :D

@Ero. The engine is a jap import jobbie. I'm guessing they got it and it didn't come with its intercooler, so they kinda just made a half-assed plan.

I've always ran unleaded, i didn't know otherwise! whoops hehe just as well its compatible

the stock intercooloer and piping fit the jap import motors, perhaps he had a fmic and took it off when he wanted to sell the car and didnt want to go through the mission of replacing the stock cooler/perhaps didnt have it anymore. o well, good luck to ya

My car doesn't have the sticker on the fuel flap, so checked in owners manual, and it says 95 unleaded for cars with catalytic converters, and 95 leaded for cars without. So I'm guessing its got a catalytic converter?
