Did you replace the VVT sprocket with a new one or a second hand one? Did you oil it before putting it in? The noise could also be the chain hitting the top guide, you can remove this to test if it is.

Did you replace the timing chain tensioner?

There are only 8 hydraulic lifters in the SR20 and if you are worried about noises, don't go solid lifters as they aren't quiet. When you replace the lifters, you will need to measure the shims to make sure you have the correct sizes to prevent any noises.

Whilst you are in there, fit RAS (Rocker Arm Stoppers) as it will save your engine should your rocker arms decide to jump out of place/break.

But out of all of this if it sounds like a diesel my money is on the VVT sprocket still, maybe you were supplied with a dud or didn't oil it before putting it in which can cause a second hand one to start to rattle.

Did you test the second hand one before you put it in?
Oiling it is simply filling it with oil so that on first startup it isn't dry until the oil reaches it.

In which case your problem is still deffinately the VVT sprocket

On the car it came off is the only way to have tested it previously, or fitted it and tested before buying. But it's too late now if it's rattling.

If it rattles it's too late to put oil in but yes the small hole and I believe pouring oil at the back allows for oil to get in.

There is one other thing you can try which sorts out the VVT rattle on startup 80% of the time but the part has to be bought new from Nissan in SA as you don't get the S14a and S15 there very commonly. Replace the VVT Solanoid on the left of the engine right by the buldge in the head that houses the VVT sprocket

Image

The one on the left is the old type and is crap, the one on the right is the revised version used in the late S14A's and S15's and has fixed VVT rattle on startup for me on two cars already.

Does yours rattle on startup or all the time? It may be that your selanoid is screwed and isn't allowing oil to your VVT on startup which is usually the reason for them going pre-maturely.

it rattles on start up and when ideling! but if i drive it it seems to go quiet!
or if its ideling and i put it in gear and leave the clutch a bit and pick up the revs it goes quiet! and keeping the revs at 2000 rpms and taking it out of gear the rattel starts again.

Deffinately VVT rattle. It probably rattled before, but if not then it was because it started dry (no oil) and on a second hand unit this can quickly start the rattle process.

I'd suggest getting a new/good second hand (tested) unit and replace the VVT Solanoid at the same time. Make sure you oil the replacements to prevent it happening again.

The milleage it has before it rattles is irrelevant. Granted they all go at sometime or another but oil quality, frequency of changes, condition of solanoid and so much more can affect how long this lasts.

The black top has an awesome mid range due to the VVT. I'll put up with the noise (as it causes no damage) for that lovely mid range from the blacktop.
