Do compression test
Check fuel pump, regulator, fuel filter.
Check plugs

Has it always done this? Could be cam timing as well if the car was worked on.

OK, so you just bought it.

1) Full service - plugs, filters, oil, coolant flush, brake fluid flush, clutch fluid flush, gearbox and diff oil, etc
2) check timing (I would actually recommend you just replace the timing belt, then you know it is good)
3) compression test
4) test fuel pump and regulator (I would recommend you replace with a Walbro anyway)
5) clean MAF
6) check for boost leaks (this includes all vacuum lines)
7) check for any other error codes

If you still have problems, then you can start trouble shooting more specific things. You cannot look for problems if the basic maintenance is not up to date.

I agree with enzio.

I bought my sx late last year and 1st thing you do is a complete service.

For the compression test i took it to ALB(previously snail conversions), they helped me out quickly and at a good price aswell. Glad I did that as they informed me that my engine mounts is also stuffed and another couple of things that I had to look at.

Let us know how it goes and I hope you enjoy the car!

Download a FSM, you will get all the info you need in that. Just google, there a few places you can find it.

It is really worthwhile to have it printed out and bound - you will use it a lot in the future
