SR20 parts... some stuff I learnt. Feel free to add.

Will be posting every now and then because it is just to much to post at once.

All from my experience and some research I have done.

Not all SR20 motors are the same. There are lots of different versions of the SR20 (de,ve,det, vet,VCT Det) they are definately not the same even if the parts look the same.

Bottom up:

Sump
- FWD and RWD is different.

Block
- FWD and RWD is different. And as far as I know the S14/S15 block is different from non VCT blocks. (not 100% sure tho) FWD block dont fit RWD. RNN14 GTI-R Pulsar/Sunny blocks are different from all other and built the strongest

Timing gear
- All SR use the same chain, Chain guides.
- Chain tensioner on VCT has oil feed hole in different place from FWD and non VCT. Roller Rocker has a slightly longer reach than other tensioners.
- oil pump and timing gear cover differ alot between DE, DET, VE and DET RWD.
- oil pump capacities and pressures differ. DE is weakest apparently then DET then VE.
- oil pump has to match head or at least the 2 bolts from the head. RWD and FWD crank pulleys differ and they don't all fit straight on.
- RWD VCT has different intake and exhaust cam gears (VCT and worm gear for CAS). RWD non VCT only has different exhaust cam gear.

more later...

CAMS:

Fwd DE and DET cams fit and work on RWD and the STD SR20 gear also fits. Just go to a engineering shop and buy a high tensile bolt if VCT gear is being removed.

Alternativeley lock your VCT intake cam in the advanced position with the STD SR20 non vct gear. Works better than DE till 6000rpm. Only retared after 6000rpm.

If you get a DE cam you need a highport SR20DE cam from a sentra - they are 248deg and 10mm lift but VCT will be disabled. For an ultimate setup you can use non turbo VCT intake cam with VCT gear and RNN14 GTIR exhaust cam. These are both 248deg and 10mm lift. The key here is the non turbo VCT S14/S15 intake cam. Some dialing and tuning will be required but will prove to be quite an awesome setup. (dont think anyone has tried the GTIR exhaust cam - would need to confirm fitment etc since RNN14 uses different rockers as far as I know and definately uses solid lifters)

RNN14 is a solid lifter head.....

Thicker rod, head and flywheel bolts, also wider bearings. Oil pump is similiar to VE SR20.

Will add some on the RNN14 later...

But the oil pump is different and better than VE pumps.

here is a pic to show you...

Some more info on SR20 timing chain tensioners...

Pic 1 shows the various different tensioners found for SRs... only 1 is the right one to use and that's the far right one.

Pic 2 shows the differences between the pirate and an OEM one from a Primera SR20.

Tensioner 1 is a pirate one found at any spares shop. Although it fits (using that very loosely) there is serious problems using these:
1. The body is shorter
2. It has a much weaker spring
3. oil feed hole design is crap

You will also see that the tensioner on the far right and the middle onehas nice thick O-rings to seal properly. However look at how fine the pitch is on the OEM S14 tensioner on the right (pic1) this also makes for fine adjustment and a much quieter and happy SR.

Spend on a S14 OEM tensioner from Nissan. @ +/- R790 it is expensive but worth every cent.

It's changed every 150000kms so R800 not that expensive.

The whole Timing chain kit is 2K excluding shipping etc...
Chain, tensioner, guides, sprocket, screws etc....

And I think it all needs to be replaced not just the tensioner, chains can stretch etc...

2k is too much.... if you know where to buy them in SA... i bought mine for 2k aswell but with 70% discount!!!

care to share??? I bought a shimisu kit from a local spares place. What I could see, the chain etc was all same as stock. Would honestly just stick to a OEM tensioner because the pirate ones are crap. OH and on RWD the cam gears are different. unless it is a red top. then you can use 1 gear to replace the intake one. Or just buy an HKS cam sprocket set.
