Sup guys Ive had a SX for a while now, so i took the car out today for a drive and on my way back i try and boost her a bit but i get nothing, my first thought was turbo pipe came off or its leaking somewhere so i get home open the bonnet but everything's still fine. So i start the car again and rev a bit while im half in the engine and hear i flippen weird noise coming from the turbo almost sounds like a bearing, but its not a constant noise only now and then randomly. So now what i want to know if the turbo is on its last legs which could be the case which would be better buy a second hand one or fix the old one? o its the Standard CA18DET motor. And i don't want to change the engine want to keep the car standard for now , thanks guys the help will be much appreciated.

Need more info, but the turbine or compressor wheel might be catching the housing.
Pull off the filter pipe and check for shaft play.

Yeah I second that as my turbo just failed aswell, no boost. The shaft has excessive play, so much so that there is too much clearence between the exhaust wheel and the housing due to the blades wearing away against the housing allowing all the exhaust gases to bypass.

get the turbo off and take it to someone to price up a rebuild (it will need balancing)

for safety replace the oil feed hose with a new braided one.

Reason they block up = turbo dies again

Hey guys my turbo in my sx is stuffed so my mate gave me a 2nd hand one he had lying around, but now i noticed a crack on the exhaust housing but very small, he said this happens to the turbos and hes got three and all three have a crack in the same place so what i wana know is this common in the turbos or will it be a problem later on..

Wheres the crack exactly? between the wastegate and turbine? I think that's fairly common. In any case I dont think you have anything to worry about.

Hey Cuz,

Crack on the wastegate will cause boost leak, you can get it welded up and machined again to sort it out, but once cracked, they always crack again.... Best is to have it drilled out and weld built for strength, then machined correctly again so it will seal properly.

Best option though is new good quality turbo though, but then again that is pricey.... N e way, good luck cuz...

Hey dude ja took the turbo to some specialists and they said i might aswel throw the thing away, can't source a turbo like the one i had but they got another turbo i can put on but going to have to modify the exhaust outlet and such so hope thats works.
