S14 Switching off :(

Hi guys please help on the way home from work the car just switched off and just swinging. after a good few minutes she started up again! I had a mate of mine check it out. We dont think its spark related as it starts again intermittantly. I just had the fuel pump replaced and same story I even put in the walbro high performance one today. We noticed that if I unplug the AFM then car starts. and it did this a number of times! so I then changed the AFM with one of an S14 that I know works and its worse still doesnt at all. swop it back same story started the first try and the second try it starts and then suffocates and dies :cry:

PLEASE HELP does anyone know who has the diagnostic equipment to see what is wrong? I have the standard ecu still.

after it dies, when you turn the ignition off and then back on, can you hear the fuel pump prime? (i.e is it working)

I ask as I had the same problem with my S13 with a Walbro, the fuel pump fuse would get hot and then cut out. After it had cooled down again the fuel pump would start working.

I originally pulled through a new thicker cable for the fuel pump, through the fuse box and fuel pump relay to the pump. That didn't help, but then I swapped the original 10amp fuse for a 15amp and have never had the problem again.

for clarity, I must have replaced the 10amp fuse about 100 times with other 10amp fuse's and everyone of them 'overheated'. I had thought a 15amp fuse would start to get even hotter but it remains perfectly cool to the touch.

Hi Daniel,

I think you may have hit the nail on the head. Just did some testing now and it didnt start when the I couldnt hear the fuel pump on ignition. When I kept trying and heard the pump she fired up one shot!

Now the question is where is the fuse for the fuel pump?

ok I checked the fuses and all seem fine. I noticed that when it struggles to start the fuel pump does not prime on ignition. I can hear the relay by the ecu clicking so it should be working not sure anymore. If I keep trying eventually she primes and the car starts on the button. I even checked the ground ont he ecu still nothing ....pls somebody help! :(

You will have to find the fuse in the engine bay relay/fuse box. Well I assume its there as I dont have a S14, but it should be in the same box as the fuel pump relay. Cant really help with that.

This is only really of any help if you have the same problem I did. But who knows.
It just started up one day with seemingly no reason. I bought a new Walbro as I thought the Walbro in the tank was packing up...which wasn't the case after all.

The fuse on mine wouldn't actually "fuse", it looked perfect and measured through with a multimeter so should have worked...but it didnt :? The fuse would get very hot though, often melting its own casing after a while. I would have to wait for it to cool down or if I replaced it with a new fuse on the spot the fuel pump would work again.

It was something I battled with for months as increasing the fuse rating didn't seem like a good idea. But in the end its the only thing that sorted out my problem. And this was after replacing every wire even remotely related to the fuel pump with a new larger gauge wiring and installing a new fuse block.

You say you can hear the relay triggering, this is activated by the ECU so it seems that wire is fine (I have had to replace the same one on my car as well)

Atleast you know it is fueling related now. You will have to troubleshoot as best as you can when you have the problem again. keep a multimeter with you. Measure the voltage at the fuse, you should get 12v which comes from the ignition.

Thanks dude its not the fuse as it is not hot, I can hear the click from the ecu but no prime from the fuel pump so I think it may be the fuel pump relay in question. any one changed that before. I had a look for it I think it is attached to the ecu , heeluva lts of wiring will certainly need help changing it. :(

The S14 fuel pump fuse is not in the engine bay like the s13, its in the kick panel on the drivers side.

Where are you based? I can have a look for you if you are in cpt. Basically what I will do is test the wiring at the fuel pump to make sure its getting power, then check the wiring and finally the fuel pump itself.
