How to check if turbo is blown?

Greetings Guys.

Well stupid question.... again.
Finally pulled the turbo off this weekend....How do I check if there is any damage.... I have checked the compressor wheel fan thingies and both sides look brand new.... Anything else I should check?

Oh and also is it possible to check rings by only pulling off the head or is a complete strip?

Thanks. :)

General ways to check is feel if there is any play on shaft, play forward and backwards is not to say the turbo is bang, only when it is exsessive and the compressor wheel can touch housing, sideways play though means jernals are going or gone, with that oil in boost pipes....

By you pushing and pulling all ways on exhaust wheel and the compressor wheel does not touch anywhere on compressor housing and turns freely...no oil in boost pipes...then you can assume it's ok...but if you have the money, overhall it just to be sure...while you have it off.

Do a compretion test on each cylinder that's how you will see how the rings are and you don't need to take anything off besides spark plugs

To double check then add some oil through spark plug hole...not much...and see if the compression rises...if it does....rings are going

LOL um already half way ripping things off... Now you tell me.. DOGH!!!!

Weel I know for a fact the head gaskets gone since there was water in the oil... So the head has to come off anyway. How do I loosen the nuts? Giant allen key? I know to put it back on I need to torque it...

Size 10 I think anyway you get a socket that fits an alen key bit that's what you need to loosen it
I would get some arp head studs and bottom end studs.

You in a murphy kak now....if the HG was gone chances are you would have gotten a wrong compression test in anyway....so...2 choices...replace HG and then take compression and hope it's good...or while you have it off...replace the rings in anyway( that means removing the engine).

A damduiker way to check rings while head is off is to try and wiggle pistons sideways with your fingers...if it moves accesively sideways....the rings needs replacement....there should be very little movement then it is an indication that it's okayish.....but as I say....thats the damduiker way and not always a true reflection on the condition of the rings.

Also...with all due respect, it sounds as if you have not done this before....it is great for you to try and learn out of it....but if you can...rather let someone that has done it before do it while you with and seeing what has to be done....otherwise you might end up needing to rebuild your engine....and spending money you don't have...

Well then it seems the engine is coming out... /sigh....
My project just went from 4 weeks to 4 months.... damn my limited time frame... and budget :)

What you could also do is mic the bore at the top and bottom if its too big then you can do the rings and bearings

Checked the turbo... has a small amount of sideways play but not touching sides.... still need to have it reckoned I reckon... Anyone wana buy a T3 BB turbo for cheap?
