Overheating issue - calling all fundi's !!

Before I start looking for the cause , maybe someone has an answer for me..... Driving this morning , not boosting , just cruising on the N1 at around 100 km'h ,and the car's heat guage suddenly went North, redline. Stopped at a garage , water levels fine , electric fan working fine , drove off nursing the car just to get to the workshop (my office) suddenly the top radiator hose burst from the heat I presume  and then the heat guage dropped instantly to normal and I could drive to work , obviously after a couple of kilos the heat guage started to climb , due to the lack of water. Thermostat maybe ? Why would the car cool down after blowing a hose ?!?

Most propably thermostat but it could be meny other things too......the guege will drop because all the water is out....

yeah..makes sense. I am going to completely remove the thermostat, if there is one in to begin with and then let her run and see what happens. There is no water in the oil , but that doesn't rule out a blown head gasket.

Taking out the thermo will still make it overheat after a while....the water goes through the radiator too fast....does not have time to cool down....

I just removed the thermostat and tested it, it is seized solid. I will go and buy another 1 , as I have to go and buy a new hose anyway.

Thank God for my Voyager... Mr Reliable , 202000 km's on the clock and not a day's trouble.....and thanks to prolong again , and as usual, for allowing me to drive the "BEAST" 28 kilos to work this morning without water !! Prolong has saved me a couple of engines over the years.

Yip pretty lucky. I bought another thermostat , which looked pretty much the same and was listed for the car according to the spares guys , I still can't really see any difference , but when I put it in , the housing cracked. Pratley and no thermostat and I am running fine , but I don't like the fact that the car is running a lot cooler now. I supose I will have to get 1 from the Agents.....R325. EISH !!

Turns out that the image in the Echlin thermostat book for the SR20 is exactly like my thermostat , but the thermostat in the corresponding boxes are not.

Trying to figure out why.

Perfect thanks , except that I still need to get her to Dynotech for a decent dyno tune. Still a bit of occasional spluttering at 1 bar. They say that they will try and tune the XMS-L management system , I hope they can , if I can ever get the car there !
