Beat my first GTI (200STi vs G5 Gti)

Dropped my GF off at work today on the way home this white G5 GTI pases me in a bit of a rush so, I start following him not thinking anything will happen.
We both happen to get caught at a robot leading to a long stretch of road, I take the left lane his in the right we both know what going to happen.
The robot changes and we both put our foot flat, I had the G5 GTi by a nose.
Second gear, The same, his not pulling away and nether am I third gear is more of the same then we both had to slam on brake's.
I gave him the thumbs up and he did the same. I didn't expect my car to run with a G5 GTI. Starting to wonder if I should swap out my SR20DE.
