LSD diff or not?

I have done some research on the Z31 diffs, the S13 and Z31 have the same diff type...R200...

all info show that my year Z31 came with an open diff....only from 87 did you get the VLSD or the CLSD....some say only the 88's came with a VSLD....as always the net has some conflicting info....

It is said that if your diff has finnes on then it is either a CLSD or a VLSD...the open diff's had a plain diff cover....

Now...my 1984 Z is suppose to have a open diff  but when I look at it my diff has finnes  which might indicate that I have a V or CLSD.....or an open diff with an finned cover... :?

Now some say to test whether you have an LSD....jack the car up...if you turn one wheel the other one must turn in the same direction.....other say if you turn the wheel in one direction the other one will turn in oppisite direction....I am not sure.....

So how do I check?

sup , just jack up the rear so that both rear tires are off the ground , and turn one wheel if the other wheel rotates in the oppsite direction then you got a VLSD, if both spin in the same direction then you got a normal diff,

hope this helps , lets us know what you got

This has been covered before Draco, DUH!!!!

Its easy, you stop infront of a church on a sunday, rev the car to 7000rpm, drop the clutch, if you leave 2 stripes its VLSD, if you leave 1 its open...

Not if your LSD is broken....then again....if it's broken I won't be able to tell by turning.....

Now you're thinking :P

If its broken then it doesnt matter, nice part is you can get one off a 200sx then, there are always 1 or 2 floating around.

The s13 has an orange dot which indicates vlsd or not.

The S13 diff won't fit, you get the long nose and the short nose, as far as I know I have the short nose and the s13 the long nose....but the internal will fit my diff....so it just needs a transplant....

This is one of the funniest treads in a long lime...

Is simple really from the outside by just looking at it it will be difficult to tell. but if yours has a normal diff the rear wheels will turn in opposite directions (note put the car in gear so the gearbox does not just spin along and making you more confused.) If yours is a VLSD another way to check is by jacking up one wheel and seeing if you can turn it...

On my brother's scooby you just jack up one wheel and undo the wheel nuts to change the tyre!!!

Uh, if you put it in gear when jacked up the opposite wheel can only ever turn in the opposite direction.

yeah but if you have a LSD it wont... had the scoob up on lift with all 4 in the air and with the gears engaged you cannot spin the one wheel much before it locks up...

A viscous lsd won't lock up at the speeds you're gonna be spinning it by hand. You will feel a greater drag than an open diff though.

Isn't that cinda logical.....that while the car is jacked and in gear that the wheels wont turn....unless you are THE HULK....and it should then turn in the same direction.....

Not trying to insult you....but you are not helping
