SR20T slope top

Hi guys, not sure if it is called a slope top, its the motor with the slightly angled cam cover that I am reffering to. Is this the motor with the variable cam timing? if so is this cam timing variable as triggered by the ecu or is it a mechanical trigger by engine speed.

I think you are talking about what they call the hunch back, n yup it's a VVT version. I was actually wondering the same thing.... I have heard though that you can overcome the VVT by swapping out the intake cam for the larger cam from the S13 Blacktop (Non VVT) which would say to me that it is mechanical. I stand to be corrected though...

well of course the action will be mechanical, however, the trigger or actuation of it is electrical, i.e. it is triggered by the ecu.

and the mechanical action is performed by oil pressure.

and yes - the s14 and s15 had the hunchback/sloped cam covers. another tell tale sign is the big bump on the cam cover around the intake cam pulley.

swapping out the intake cam pulley with a non-vvt one will remove the vvt.

OK, great to have confirmation on that.. I was wondering though, since the VVT is like the only reason I have found that people truly avoid the VVT motor for, would swopping out the cam not then make it better to carry on modding than the S13 Series red & black tops once again ? (Well VVT and pricing)

its kindof a mute point.

the vvt is there in the stock motor to provide more torque in the low and middle revs.

when guys get serious about modding these motors, the vvt is dropped as it causes hassles.

however, i wouldn't avoid one of these motors cos of the other benefits. things like bigger stock turbos, different inlet manifold design, bigger stock downpipes, but the kicker is that they are years newer than the other ones. that means less mileage, and a generally better condition.

OK, so basically you are saying that if I can get a VVT for my Nizzy I should ? Is parts not a problem like the CA18DET has proven to be lately? As far as I know they weren't all that common in SA cars? My info might be shady though... :?

Appologies for all the Q& A but this choice is my current nightmare, possibly going on the weekend to by my SR20DET for my Nizzy...

Well I did the notch top / hunch back etc... hehe style SR20 swap.

VC is correct. it has a electronic sender on the motor for the VVT.
My VVT was removed when before I bought the motor. and I actually want to put it back for the low rev torque.

I'm my personal opinion I won't go for the S13 SR20 variant. The S14SR was built with newer better technology. thus its design might be just a bit better than the S13SR.

Also like VC mentioned. The Stock S14SR came with bigger turbo, better flowing mani's as well as a better designed plumbing system.

As I told antman, this was a relativly easy swop for a noob. even with keeping the stock ECU.

If anyone needs info on how to do the swap. I have a guide as well as a wiring how to DVD to help with the swap.

my 2cents :D

Cuz, I would be like the most eternally gratefullest person you have ever met.... My boet is a mach so he is gonna do the swap for me and going to runn it on a dicktator system....

Quick question ? Which is better, the T28 or a TD04 ? I suppose if it is the BB T28 it wins correct? But if it is a Bush T28 is the TD04 (Straight off a WRX STi) better? Also, how are parts on availability and pricing on the VVT motors?

Hehe. All good.

Well parts arn't too hard to find. and as for the prices. well they might be a bit cheaper than the CA here and there.

Unfortunatly with all turboed motors the parts are expensive.

as for the turbo's... I'm not sure.

With the TD04 you will need a new turbo mani. downpipe and possible a external wastgate?

whereas with the T28, its a direct bolt-on. I'm running a GT28RS on my SR and its insane!

My brother has a friend that is currently building me custom flange joints to fit between the current manifold and the TD04 (K@K shape flange I tell you that). It also still has it's original wastegate in fully functioning order. Once the flange joints are built it will still be a direct bolt on and can still revert back to original T25G. I think it will have a better spool up time though coz of the smaller exhaust housing (Smaller than T25's), and from flow charts I have seen it has a better flow rate than the T28 but alas this still needs to be proven.

I'm all up for experiments though, ha ha ha. I have my current CA's T25 boosting @ 1Bar (Have to run octane booster, otherwise she pings), but not quite doing it for me. Besides, I have bought 2 different crank angle sensors and both were duds, well the first more than the current one, atleast this one runns when fuly advanced. O and not to forget the coil rail I have replaced, and the injector harness is also kinda shot... So next logical step is replace it all.... HA HA, I found the best excuse . . .

Ya, with the TD04 you will need a modded manifold and downpipe. They have internal wastegates to no need for an external. They spool super quick which is nice. The 13G spools super fast but is a bit small even for the CA. The 15T can be run up to about 200rwkw.

There is just one thing I still need to know where I can get it from before I can start my project page though, and that my friends, is a body kit . . . Has anyone managed to figure out where to get body kits from yet ? Ooops , suppose I should rather have asked this in the Body kit section... (A local South African place though)
