Sokar - Another SR20 Rebuild

Well we didnt pull my motor out of my sx just so VC could run his motor in, mine was due for a rebuild aswell, here are some low quality cellphone pics of the progress :P

A very very dirty block, there are a few oil and powersteering leaks that are going to be fixed

Bores look fine, but the block will be re-sleeved to make room for some forged items.

The head, I was very very sad to disassemble the head, it was the quietest SR head I've ever heard (lifter and cam noise) and I hope it will stay quiet after the rebuild

Gonna need a new clutch, this one is poked... Also one of the "local" items, I think I might try the route Phinx went

Another item to upgrade, the throttle body

Measures between 40 - 50mm across, will check once I strip it off the intake

And now, the reason for the rebuild, this is a relatively new looking bearing, the lead coating still intact

This is a more used bearing, bits of the copper poking through

This is a F*#ed bearing, with the lead gone and the copper polished, my cyl 1 and 2 bigends had spun in the conrod. The bearings we pulled out are already 0.25 oversized, so I really hope the crank etc is still usable.

Here is a summary of the bearings, this isnt all of them, some are still in the tub with all the engine bits, notice the worn thrust bearing aswell, I have no faith in whoever built this motor before...

There you go, This week I will get the parts of to the engineers to check the damage and start ordering parts!

Grocery List:
Forged pistons
ARP headbolts
ARP Mains
ACL bearings (probably duraglide because of the oversize)
Cosworth MLS Headgasket
New Oilpump
New Clutch
Active Sump

Will post some pics of the crank as well as the pistons tomorrow.

hey man...

upskirt! NICE!!!

the motor wasnt too bad yo... so dont stress, it will be up and running like a savage in no time!

those bearings were poked tho - Gees. looked pretty though, nice and shiny brass/copper appearance!

with a grocery list like that its gonna be a nice S13 sr20det!

what about the greddy style inlet manfold that FSR is selling???

the back of the mains were perfectly ok, but on those bearings that spun, they were fooked!!!

not so nice to see! :(

yeah - we were busy this weekend!!!

we got my engine out in less than 2 hours. it was about 1 hour 40 mins. a new record for us! then we stripped that motor in a couple of hours. engineering this week. hopefully it goes back in the weekend after next!!!

I'm suspect the same, the bearing sizes looked way out on the outer edge, I could put 1mm feeler guage either side of the bearing once it was out.

Hope the conrods can be salvaged....

BTW: An old engine builder told me of an trick they pulled to combat running bearings during races.

They would buy two sets of bearings, exact same size and toss the sides with no grooves... and put grooved bearings on the top and bottom ensuring the bearings stayed lubed throughout...

Read something similar on building drift SR20 engines and CA18 engines as both love to run bearings...

Interesting, but this would just be for main mearings, not big ends as neither have a groove on the big end side? And the big ends are the problem.......

yip he only spoke of the mains, does SR20 bigends not have grooves?

yeah, it would be nice to find a proper cure for this, its the reason i gave up on the ca18.. kept running number four bigend.

here's to hoping your conrods can be resized eh? :wink:

dont the ACL race have grooves on the big ends too???
