Smoking exhaust!
Well I did my exhaust a week ago and since then my car started smoking on idle. It never used to do that.
Now some people told me its the PVC valve, and said I should clean it, abd so I did but it kept on smoking. Then I was told to remove the breather pipes and see whats happening and still it smoked. I even bought a breather filter and put that on so that no oil is breathed back into the turbo, but still it smokes.
Now the guys who have been there and done that...tell me what is the cure for this bad habit????

I wouldnt say the turbo is shot, but chances are it needs a new seal kit, specifically the rear oil seal on the turbine side.
It normally happens to guys that get a bigger exhaust, it happened to me and a few other guys I know of, some are lucky and it doesnt happen.
The turbo shaft spins quite fast
and the seal wears a groove in the shaft, not enough to make it leak because the seals springyness keeps it in the groove. Now with the bigger exhaust the wheel and shaft ride "further back" down the turbo as the back pressure isnt pushing it forward as much as it used to so the seal pops in and out the groove as you accell and decell (boost, off boost).
Its normal and a seal kit usually fixes it, in bad cases its a new shaft, also it shouldnt smoke alot. mine wasnt bad so I just lived with it.

lol...
its because your exhaust is too small, its causing too much back pressure on the exhaust blade of the turbo, thus causing minute shaft vibrations which tend to slightly damage the bearing, and then the seal overheats and becomes slightly brittle - which causes oil to leak down his exhaust, and thus it smokes on idle!!!

ya...+-R500 is cost of seal/repair kitSokar wrote:Cost? Well a garrett seal kit is between 400 and 600, then you need someone to take it out and someone to install the seals.
may sound silly, but why not try the repair yourself???there is a step by step guid on turbo rebuild in SnS issue 47
and a good few on the web

Yeah, if you arent changing wheels etc that effect balancing then you should be able to do it yourself.turbophonic wrote:ya...+-R500 is cost of seal/repair kitSokar wrote:Cost? Well a garrett seal kit is between 400 and 600, then you need someone to take it out and someone to install the seals.
