ok guys, I put in the Mobil 1 oil, but to no avail. the lifters are still noisy as ever and I'm now driving the only diesel SX around...

can the lifters be serviced ?

how will I idnetify which lifter is the culprit, and is this exercise going to cost me and arm or leg, or both...

Thanks guys.

How sure are you that it is lifters?

How bout you run your diesel sx on diesel oil and maybe the detergent in the oil will sort out your lifters.

I've had a listen yesterday. There is also the issue of the exhaust leak which makes it hard to hear properly, but the lifters are a bit noisy.

Coz I had a bearing knock and I thought it was lifters.

Just make very very sure before you spend your money!

Must say, today I can distinguish between lifters and bearing knocks. If you are not sure, come around and we listen.

I am so tempting to try the diesel oil to stop the noisy lifters, but eish, all the different schools on this one

Would the CA18DE lifters be the same as the CA18DET considering that you can swap cams as well?

Is the problem that you can't get, or the price?

VC also said this one before. We need to replace them with new ones. Mine(from spare engine) was prepared by engineers and still they dance around while being noisy. SO, mine was replaced, prepared and still is noisy. Again I say we need to replace this old 17 year crap of lifters. We need new ones. You may be lucky with spare lifters from other engine, just to start being noisy after a while again. Most frustrating - ask me I know. I had them on the old engine before rebuild and now with the rebuild twice done and still there are noisy lifters.

I think the same happened with Toby and Vlade if I am not mistaken

the ca18de ones will work. i've used a few in my car!

but you guys need to invest in a few tools! the best one for this sort of investigation is the mechanics stethoscope thingy!!! basically a stethoscope with a long metal rod on the end, instead of a cup.

you put it near the offending noise and you can hear exactly what is going on.

anyway - the best bet to tell if your lifters are still good or not, is to get them out of the head, and then try to squish them.

they need to move. quite a bit. they are basically two plates, separated by a spring. if they dont/cant move together and apart again, then you need to replace them!

and follow the correct bleeding/preparation procedure before they go back in!

Some people say leave lifters in oil, bleed them...others say just put them in

Could there be design differences between Nissan and other lifters ie VW?

Ok, just called a parts shop to enquire on availability of lifters.
Good news: R39-00 plus vat seems to be the price( per lifter).
Let us see by later this afternoon if we can get stock. This part shop will let me know.
For that price I am in.

If I am not mistaken, our FSM says oil them.

R39-00???

damn thats cheap.

if you can get them, just buy all 16 at a time!!!

soaking them in oil will help a little. but make sure they are the right way up.

bleeding them by dipping your hand in the oil with the lifter, and squashing ALL (i mean ALL) of the air out - will bleed it properly.

do it properly once!

R39???

That's free. Nissan wants like R370 + VAT each back when I last looked.

Luckily my sx's lifters are quiet. But I know it's only a matter of time.

Aren't they the same as RB lifters too?
