Ok Spoke to Craig (The guy building my motor)

Number 1 Pistons Rod Cap bearing was out of Spec but that didnt cause the noise, It seems the ring landing on Piston number 1 failed at Comp 1.

He says there are no signs of detting so Im not sure why it went?

Ring land failure first time I've heard that it happen to an CA18 but its not uncommon under the VW's... :(

Maybe its was just age or a buildup of fatigue due to hard driving 8)

But you got forged units now right, so no worries isn't it  But one would like to know the cause so one can prevent it in future.

How long does it take you guys to assemble a motor because it took me around 3 day to complete?

Every single Nut and Bolt was washed and cleaned with steel wool. Also my new water-pump was fucked so I used the old 5000km one
Every Bolt hole was cleaned with ear buds to confirm good seating with the ARP stuff and normal bolts.

I’m showing good compression on all cylinders a just by hand cranking now all I need to do is attach the flywheel and clutch then we are good to go.

About a day... but then again, I've done it 5 times now, but only if everything is prepared, with cleaning and so forth also about 3 days even longer.

Yeah its important to keep all bolts and there surfaces clean to get proper torque ratings out of them...

Glad to see it coming along... we must sommer confirm you for the 22nd event, cuz it looks like you'll be done way before then. :D

Cleaning the nuts and bolt is just a tin of petrol/prepsol and a rag to wipe dry.

A complete motor rebuild should take about4 hours if done properly, I am not including putting it back in the car and starting it just the assembly.

Well The Motor has been put in this weekend.
But I have to Thank Brenwin (sokar) and Claus for there assistance in installing the motor.

There have been a few small problems, Oil leak at the rear crank seal
Only one of the new guages seems to work.

The motor Idles fine, There are no serious problems or noises.
The motor has been put through it first section of "Hard break-in practice"

Its been at 85 % or the rev range and full boost a few times to get the rings to seat correctly and the oil has been changed
