How do you emprove if.....

This springs from Phinxes topic about his rebuild and his previos power figures.
A simple question, for example.....if I take a motor that makes 100kw on the wheels, lets say a CA18DET witch boosts 0.65-0.7 standard, timing is 15 digrees, compression standard=100kw
Now I add some stuff, tubilar manifold, bigger exaust housing on turbo, exaust, chip....it would make more power on standard boost=140kw, now I lower my boost to 0.5, compression a bit lower, timing retarded by about 2 digrees....
How does that engine make more power?
Hennie maybe you can shed some light on this because I don't understand....

hmmm, there's another mod there you didn't mention that has a big effect on the power.

The cam.....but does it really make a big diff on a turbo motor, aspesially is all things has been "retarded"?

one of the major contributors, the turbo on his engine came of mine, it has got the large turbine housing, but it also has a GT28RS compwheel in there. The turbo comp housing and centre has been machined to get it to fit. So the airflow is majorly better than a stock turbo.

So that means he actually has a T28 turbo...?

the comp wheel is a bigger than the stock T28, stock is around 42mm ind and 54mm exd and the RS is 47mm ind and 60mm exd. Stock one flows 270hp max and the RS 360hp. If you check the comp maps you'll see the stock one at max efficiency at 0.5 bar boost flows around 150hp and the RS just under 200hp at that boost. So flow is majorly improved.

OK...now I understand better, even with all the drawbacks the turbo still delivers more than a stock one would with more boost.
Mistery solved.....

yip, like I always tell Phinx, it's all about the flow. LOL

Another question Hennie....
If I take the core of a T25, put on a AR 80 compression housing and a t28 wheel with a ar64 exhaust housing with a standard exaust wheel....how will it compare to your turbo?

If I had to do a CA, I would first fit a nice turbo, GT30 or a nice T3/T4 combo and a management and make 200kw without a problem and retain it streetable. Fullrace is another story.

I am asking because that is what I did, I did not have it on the dina yet to see if there is a diff but it does not hurt to estimate if the setup will make a diff.

the .64 turbine housing does wonders, power is smoother, turbo runs cooler and makes more topend power. The A/R80 comp housing will improve flow a bit but nothing major as it's not the housing doing the pumping work, it'll be an improvement over a stock turbo but not a killer turbo.

Ok, I had a ar48 compression housing and the exhaust was ar54 if I am not mistaken....well at least I will do a bit better...thanks.
