Project: Fuzz's Blue SX Street/Track Attack

Post by fuzz123 »

So as most know I ended up with 2 SX's... they are such awesome cars.

Using the green monster as a daily drive I want to slowly build up the Blue SX to be used on the track and keep it street legal! In the long run I want a 250wkw reliable car. Short term: get it running :)

Mods done when bought:
HKS GTSS Turbo

HKS Intercooler

HKS VPro FCON Management

550cc HKS Injectors

HKS EVC Boost Controller

HKS Induction

GREDDY BOV

To Start:
Bought B-SX

Engine Bay when I got it:

So first up took it for pressure test at ALB and some Power runs on the Dyno to see whats happening. No leaks found and made 160wkw at low boost(0.6 bar) and 180wkw at high boost(1 bar).

Had a look underneath and saw engine mounts were worn. Got some from Gary57 and fitted them.
New Bottom old on top

In the meantime New coilies was fitted aswell dont have pics here, they were bought from BK.
Awesome road holding but damn they are hard

Next up was the brakes. Bought some powerbrake brakes put them on but realized that the front studs were in a bad shape. Previous owner put spacers on front mags but the studs were too short and they were on the last bit of thread holding. Glad the wheels didnt come off. After a lot of trouble to get new studs I ended up buying new mags with the correct offsets so I bought original studs and put them in.

New mags fitted:

I was driving one afternoon and heard noise coming from engine saw boost was gone etc. So I limped the car back home(driving 1500rpm max) and as feared Turbo was fooooked

Started process to replace Turbo:
1. Remove old Turbo abd any other pipes etc. in the way.
2. Bought Turbo from Kyle
3. Bought Manifold from Riekert

So manifold was workable but had to do some upgrades/repairs on it.
Smoothed out the rough edges with an air pencil grinder. Did a mock fit up and a conversion bracket from T28 to T3 would lift it up too high so had to change mani a bit.

Mani with T28 flange ready to be welded on. Made it work with studs having to push through the Turbo and fastened.

Had it shot blasted at Bro's work :D and looked good

So started installing everything, fitted braided pipes etc. and this is where I'm at now:

Still need to tie down pipes and make it look neat. :D refit radiator + fans and build downpipe
I know I missed a couple of things here and there but will keep this updated as I go along!

Hopefully I can start the car tomorrow without any worries!

Good job. If you want it reliable on track.. focus on your cooling. Rather run 150 kw all day than 250 kw for a couple of laps.

Thanks for the advice!

As an update today, finished Downpipe and reinstalled all the little things. Car started on the first swing and all seemed fine. Took her for a quick spin and everything works but she needs to be retuned. Will have to take her to NXGEN as she has the HKS FCON V Pro management and thus far I think only they can do it.

Stopped back inside and saw that I have an oil leak :( I think the 1 O-Ring is worn out. I didnt get a new 1 with my new oil pump and just used the old 1. So will have to take it off and fix that but atleast she ran a couple of km's :)

Ok so its been a while and only bad news to report.

Car was tuned then, replaced exhaust mani gasket (thanks hentieb) everything sounded fine until... smoke, lots of it! Opened op the hood, oil all over near turbo side. Dipstick was pushed out and oil escaped from there. Opened up the oil cap and there was a slightly milky look, water got in somewhere. Most likely head gasket.

I was going to pull the engine at some time but hey there is no time like the present or rather near future. Going to sit down make a list of the things I want to do while I open/pull engine out. Lets see what I can come up with.

Thanks,

So this turned into another full on project car. Don't know how long this will take, but I need to do it properly now.

Lets see if I can finish it before Riekert finishes his... :domo:

Ok so I am sitting with a tough decision....

Do I go fully forged and all out, and make it a forever and ever project(like some other projects on here  )

OR

Do I just put the standard new parts in, add water meth boost 1.2bar and be finished in about a year odd.....

What would you guys do? I would love some opinions.

option 2 till you break your pistons then go forged. maybe just get your existing pistons ceramic coated

Ok so it has been forever since I updated anything on here.......maybe thats cause the car is standing....

So I ordered some parts for it:
Timing kit,
Water pump,
ARP Head studs,
Oil cooler kit,
Cam cover with AN fittings & carbon fibre spark plug cover,

Then I am waiting for prices on CP pistons and Eagle rods.....SO just maybe this will be a fully forged SR soon

Will take some pics as the parts arrive. [smilie=200sx_2guns.gif]
