Wow that looks fantastic!!! How does a Beemer compare to the Nissan's w.r.t drifting? I guess the throttle response on the NA BMW is better than the turbo Nissan's? Easier to modulate...

I'm thinking of getting a relatively simple drift car in a year or three, so reliability and ease-of-use are high on the priority list for me... BMW [3-series]/Nissan [S13/14/old Skyline] / something else?

Drifting is definately catching on here in SA, there are a few dedicated drift events here in Gauteng already, so I think you'll have a good market for your business when you come back to SA. There are a lot of Nissan boys up here...

Keep up the good work man, I always enjoy a good build/story/ride thread.

Regards
Martin :D

Well the throtttle response is irrelivent in my opinion, this is because the nissan is setup for early boost and will always be setup that way. Also when you are drifting you are mostly at around the point in the rpm range when you have boost

I personally preffer the 200 for drifting. The chasis on a bmw is built more for grip so is more dificult to get and keep sideways but once you have it down its good. T he 200sx chasis was almost built for drifting it's so good (as is the skyline chasis).

If money is your concern, I'd always say go 3 series due to the fact that the majority of them are reliable as hell, cheaper to buy and setup for drifting. This BMW has been drifted to within an inch of it's life and the only thing I've had to replace is a half shaft due to the welded diff eventually wearing it out.

Nissans are awesome but lack reliability, ask anyone here. But hey, I'm a sucker for punishment. As long as you look after your 200sx properly, it should serve you well.

Yeah I'm amped, I wish I was there now. Ever since I made the decision all I have heard are good things, the potential is huge and I want to promote grass roots drifting, cheap and good fun!

Thanks for your comments bud, see you on track!

Here some videos of me fighting with the bmw on a very slippery track:

The BMW is no good on wet tracks! Understeer heaven!

So after waiting 4/5 months, my engine arrived at TJZ-Engineering, but they got the wrong engines from the supplier (not TJZ-Engineering's fault, must've been mis-communication between them and the suppliers). They got straight cam SR's when I was after a bent cam.

I toyed with the idea of running a straight cam, but quickly scratched that as there is a fair amount of work involved for no gain, in fact it is going backwards at my car's current spec under the bonnet.

So TJZ-Engineering kindly refunded me my deposit and I went and picked this up at Doritech. It was an engine that one of their clients sold to me. He originally bought it from MPH Customs but changed his plans so I picked it up for £625 including a T28 turbo. Not bad for a SR at 68K miles with good compression test results :D
I do hope there are no nasty surprises when i start it up, but I was sold it in good faith from a regular on Driftworks, with word from MPH Customs that it was all good.

Here she is in all her dirty glory:

I woke up on Saturday and saw I was going nowhere in my snow plough

So I decided to look under the cam cover and get to cleaning the engine.

Under cam cover:

Not the cleanest but the cam lobes are spot on and it's much better than the gunked up one that came out of mine originally. When I went to fit the rocker cover, 5 of the bolt's threads striped on the head before the bolts even reach 1nm of torque. So I will be helicoiling them when my kit arrives during the week.

Cleaning the engine...

After:

Was a tough job, can't believe how dirty this block is compared to the one that came out of mine. So that's as clean as I could get it without doing a full strip down and re-paint.

Then I fitted the turbo assembly, new spark plugs, New VVT Selanoid and a few other bits.

All that is left is the rocker bolts that striped and the Mocal sandwich plate which I need a washer/spacer for in order to fit. Then I'll get it on the ground, fit the flywheel, ACT clutch and the gearbox then she is ready to go in the car! :D

Can't wait to get this car fired up and on the road again. Still have to do the UK Roadworthy test first though! :(

Couldn't help but laugh at my growing pile of snapped drive shafts from the BMW

Fitted the engine and all the bits that go along with it and I fired it up 2 hours ago :D

Sounds good and I can't wait to take it for a drive. Need to spend next Saturday getting it ready for MOT and then I can get rid of the BMW and enjoy my datsun again :D

As happy as a pig in shit right now! Its been way too long!

Car has just passed roadworthy today and is back on the road! Took it for a drive and was smiling from ear to ear the whole time...I still am. 5 months is way too long!

I will upload pics of the engine bay and exterior as it sits now, just need to clean it first as 5 months of being off the road tends to leave a car looking sorry for itself.

So now to book the shipping and it will be in CPT beginning of May! Plane tickets are booked as well...its all starting to happen now eventually.

As promised, here are the pictures, new engine in place:

This weekend I installed a nice little clean simple sound install for the daily driving (800 watt amp, Kenwood MP3 front loader 4 mids and soon to have 2 6x9's), headunit:

Amp in boot:

Amp hidden away (Looks all factory just the way I wanted the sound):

And then I took some pictures after a quick clean:

Added these guages today, AFR, Oil pressure (still to be connected, may need to be replaced) and Boost.
Image

And I was going to be drifting this coming Saturday but I found this whilst connecting the boost guage pipe:
Image

So I'm going to spend the drifting money on a tubular manifold, 3" elbow, 3" super low downpipe, braided turbo lines and new gaskets (at least the manifold to block 3 layer gasket is new and re-usable).

Gotta love Nissan turbo gaskets...but I guess it's about time it went, especially after all of the downpipe scraping I've been doing.
