No major update guys...

I did about 70KM with the car on Friday, engine ran like a stallion, till I heard a very load noise (like a ball bearing bouncing in coffee can, very hollow sound) sounded like it came from the exhaust... Immediately turned off the car, toed the car back home.

I haven't found what caused it, I got compression, turbo looks fine (checked both wheels), cams and lifters look fine, also checked in the cylinders with a wire and torch nothing in there, plugs look fine.

Wish I could put a camera down the spark plug hole and inspect the cylinders.

Think what it can be is that I took my exhaust to be modified earlier on Friday and that some of the welding came of and is bouncing around in the exhaust, will check tonight if its that. I'm really clueless at the moment

OK so after a long time of no updating, I just think its fair to give you guys the low down...

I'm still struggling to find out what the sound from the manifold is, I had Duane (The Calibrator) there yesterday to give me a second opinion, he also reckons its not from the engine, which is rather satisfying. Thanks for your input man.

He pointed out some quirks that I need to sort out, once that is done I'll try and get the car to him.

Now for the eye candy...

Image
Engine just before she went in and that is how I transported her from the workshop (Back of parents yard) to front of yard where the car is

Image
Waited nearly a year to to fit this bitch... Yip that is an Exedy 5 paddle copper clutch! It grips so good that when I didn't ref match my gears on down gearing that my back wheels chirped  but easy enough to drive and still have clutch control at an incline... beautiful

Image
We really struggled to get the engine to mount as the ABS was so much of an issue that we could not get the engine onto the mounts... We finally decided to remove the ABS temporarily just to get the engine to fit. From this pic you can see just how close the ABS is the manifold, about 2mm spacing... NOT ENOUGH! It took 2 tries to get it to fit, now I have it about 5/7 cm away, but not sure if my bonnet will close

Image
Engine in place, nice site... It's just sorry everything didn't go as smoothly as planned!

So now that the engine was in place and we could get her to start, some problems arise... Frustrations Frustrations , and more Frustrations .

* The freaking starter died on me... Unlike a normal starter that just goes click and does fuckall this one turns the engine twice and stops... It took a whole day of investigation and battery checking as it really really looked like a dead battery, but in the end it was the starter

Image
Old starter... NO BUSHES!

Image
I took some time and rebuild the starter from spares that I had... I actually first tried to fit the spares but after some time of trying to fit them I realized the don't fit, there is a difference between a FWD, RWD Auto and our starters. I also realized that my starter was opened up before as it missed some parts... WTF... Gave the starter a new motor and new bushes and replaced some other parts, greased it and walla... Now she turns like a snail in salt.

* Then as mentioned in one of my earlier posts, the oil cooler is a bitch and leaked everywhere... we solved all of it... then suddenly the hoses started leaking at the crimped connections... THIS COST ME R75 TO FIX The guy from the hydraulics place told me that he understood why I only paid R700 for the line kit... Because its true FONG KONG wonders. NUFF SAID... :x

If I can give anyone advice on buying parts... BUY NAMED BRANDS! The saying is never wrong... you get what you pay for!

Now I have a few small quirks to sort out, then I must just find out what is causing that sound in the manifold, then the car will go for a tune up. So yeah... I'm not burning the car down just yet.

I think I changed my mind... Listen for your selfs...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zbseh_lUryo

I drove the car last night the noise is still there, didn't have an effect on power or anything, but then at one stage I did loose power and it seemed like was running low/no compression or 3 cylinders... then it came back idled fine... then every now and then loose power...

Fuck if the problem was just consistent and I can pin it down it would be at least a small relieve when it does go up in flames

that noise is the strangest thing i've ever heard.

wtf???

its like a musical triangle...

did you check for musical irish dwarves in the sump??? you may just get a pot full of gold!!!

no seriously, very strange and the engine sounds ok otherwise. you aren't running stock management are you? i'm sure you have wolf, right? i reckon coil replacement on these motors would help, but i'm not 100% why i have that feeling! cos everyone and common sense says that the coild should be fine!!!

Woowweee it sounds just like the sound I want my car to make when I switched off and opened the door and forgot to put the lights off :-)

From the video I can't tell where the sound is coming from, but what a weird sound - sounds like the side of the engine tapping against one of the shiny pipes or something. Doesn't sound terminal though...

Thought about it a bit, it sounds to clear to be coming from the inside of the engine. My advice would be to take off all the fan belts and then try it, that way you can see if it is not maybe something like a waterpump or even some thing that got in your altinator or AC compresor.

PS love what you have done with your car, if i had the money :D
had 92 200sx, had 93 240sx, had BMW 330D, had 97 Prelude, Audi RS6.

I have done that, the only belt on there at the moment is the water pump, but I even ran it without that for a small while to check... Well when standing close the engine it does sound like it coming from the manifold area, its also clearly heard inside and under the car. But it resonates through the exhaust which makes it quite load in the car.

It might just be hey... it might just be.

I have this gut feeling that it might be a conrod and there is too much play on the journal... but that is just my mind pondering around.

I have decided that the car will be taken to an expert and he will be able to tell me what's wrong. And what needs to be done, costs and what not. So yeah this weekend I'll slap the car together (put back bonnet and bumper) and toe it to where it needs to go. Then if he needs the car for a month or two at least it gives me some comfort that she will be getting some attention.

The other fuck up in my life... My Polo's engine has seen better days, it daily sees 6000rpm and 180km/h, and thus the abuse has now clocked up, so this one might need a rebuilt SOON and thus the Nissan must be working for the time that I'll need to rebuild the Polo, at least that will be cheap rebuild and quick.

Hope you come right with your engine, it's always bad when things like this happen.
