sweet dude I appreciate the help, but when I unplug the solenoid its still there, so im pretty sure its the chain on the upper guide. Thanks for the advice!djtreble wrote:There is a cheaper solution to try first (especially if it's in the early stages/light rattle)
The selanoid that you unplug is replaceable. The S15 SR's came out with a different design for this to cure the VVT rattle but they never did a re-call, nor did they admit to this![]()
See here:
The one on the left is more than likely the one you have (old design), you need to replace it with the one on the right (new/s15 design). You can get these new from Nissan, or look internationally for it second hand (I can source if you need, just pm me).
It has cured VVT rattle 70% of the time in my experience, only time it hasn't is when the rattle was very bad.

Ok so me and the mad scientist removed the upper timing chain guide and the sound that was annoying me is totally gone!
so guys the solution was to change the timing chain tensioner and remove the upper guide
which btw nissan stopped installing on the models 98 upwards, obviously they knew something we didnt
. Also the chain was nice and tight no play when we removed the guide.
