i'm not too clued up on the electrical side of things, but my justification is this:

the alternator absolutely has to be there, so that you can make it to work int he mornings, and so that you dont have to stop at a garage to fill up with fuel, check water and oil, and change your battery!

there are differences between the viscous and the alternator. the alte has bearings installed on its main shaft, making it run very smoothly and with little resistance. its also not controlled by some clutch mechanism. when the engine is running then its running.

the viscous fan is big and bulky, and offers a helluva lot of air resistance. it hangs off the end of the water pump and is not supported by anything, except 4 m10(???) bolts. just look what happened to phinx's waterpump!

my engine has been balanced, my viscous fan not. it strains too much, sounds like a 4x4, and is most annoying!!!

i dont care if i'm straining my altenator, i hate(strongly dislike!!!) viscous fans!!!

On the fact that the alternator has to work harder to compensate for the fans... :?

The alternator is gonna charge at Q x RPM, and not at what is required, power is drawn from the battery and not directly from the alternator.

And the fans might require ±14 Amps to run, but it's only for initial startup there after they might only require ±2 Amps (Your starter requires nearly 3 times that). If I look at it this way and speaking from past SPL Competition cars we built, there comes a point where you require more ampage than what the battery can deliver and you require it at a greater rate as what the alternator can charge the battery then you start to have problems...

Our alternators are rated at ±90A/h IIRC, that means we put in batteries up that 90A/h if you put in a 120A/h battery you might never be able to charge it fully.

Well this is how I understand it.

sounds fair

veecee, you still have a working viscous sitting on a shelf somewhere?
or anybody?
before i go the electric route, first wanna get car working like it should.
this *might* be a rule of thumb for modding - first get everything working as it should before the next mod, so if it doesnt work you know where to start looking. if you put 12 diff mods on and the thing wont start... :?
(well thats what makes sense to me)

btw my fan wobbles after my last BIG boom, as available for reading on the site (the towing thing) - and that makes my water pump nervous

Well this is how I understand it.
Vlade, I feel we getting closer to the answer. But why then the fan or fans pull the sx RPM's down initially and during. When you want to accelerate while fans are on, because they must be on, the alternator charges heavily. As low as 2 Amps??? I dont know. But granted you get electric motor fans and then you get electric motor fans. Let us ask the question this way around. I dont need a battery ok. So we throw out the alternator totally. Forget the weight aspect of alternator of course. Will there be Kw gain?

window - i will have to check my box of left over bits. i honestly carent remember. if its there - u can have it. but i have a strong feeling in my poop-all that i threw it as far as possible!!!!

chem - i schkeem you need a battery broo!!!

jk - for me, i wasn't chasing kw's - i wanted that noise to go away. how can a "sportscar" sound like a bakkie??? mine did anyway - florin's skyline doesn't sound like that - maybe my viscous drive was finished???

Yip his engine still here... it was f-up it up good though we opened it up to have a look at it, he ran a bearing and half melted a piston :) only thing there still usable is the block. Head is crap metal, cam's scrap metal, crank scrap, 3 good rods, 3 good pistons  16 broken lifters, I must actually post a pic of it.

Holy CRAP!!! and I thought that engin could be atleast used as spares, but apparently not!! hmmm.... crank is scrap, head is scrap, cam is scrap, 16 broken lifters? then I dont even want to know how he was able to drive the damn thing! Yeh, post the pic! so i can tell him "I told u so!" 8) Well, it seems if ppl do buy a 200SX, then it needs a new engin! (as in swop everything out straight, unless the known good parts of course..) but thats the price of the car dammit!! lol

Ok before we get to far off topic.

I went and had a look at this Spare motor I wanted to buy. In all honesty its a total piece of crap. Everything good on the motor has been striped and its just the head and block. Plus the guy wants a crazy price.

I just walk away didn't even speak to the guy.

Ok now down to the topic.

The car is running Pic's will be posted soon. In all honestly electric fan's make no difference on the Ca18, I would switch back to the Clutch fan any time. And I mean no difference. In not saying its the same with all car but on my ca18 nothing.

Look it does make everything in the engine bay look alot neater

Now its time for that Oil cooler to be installed
